Viviane system - can it track a moving target or only lock a fixed position?

In Chuck's great guide on the Gazelle he writes on page 78 in part 12:

''HOW TO USE HOT3 MISSILES (SA-342M)

10) Ensure all preparations on previous page are done.

11) Fly towards target and come to a hover from a concealed and safe position.

12) Engage auto-hover as explained in the AUTOPILOT & TRIM section.

13) Turn weapon key to either JOUR (Day) or NUIT (Night).

14) Select desired HOT3 station (1/2/3/4 = stations, 0 = safety)

15) Use TV slew controls (; , . /) and Zoom knob (= - ) to find desired target.

16) Lase target to lock it and range it. A white rectangle will appear.

17) Press “Auto-Slave Toggle” (“E”) on pilot’s stick to automatically steer the helicopter

to the slaved target you just lased.

18) Optional: set Camera to “ASS” (Asservi = Slaved) to track target with camera.

19) If all launch parameters are met (range under 4300 m + target lased), missile launch

is authorized (BON/OK lamp illuminated). Press “Missile Launch” button (Space).''

Is that an actual feature of the Viviane system (i can get it to lock on a position but not to track a moving target myself) or did he type that up a bit ambiguous?

I think the vivianne does lock onto a Stationary Target providing you are withing firing range. So even if not in Auto Hover, there can be a bit of manuevering without losing sight of the target.

But then I forget because I haven't flown the "M" model for a few weeks.

However, if I do remember correctly, even if you are NOT withing firing OR Laser Ranging range, the vivianne will maintain a Vector i.e. "X" number of degrees vertically and "X" number of degrees laterally even when moving, albeit NOT locked onto a target or specific geographic ground location.

Of course, I have been wrong once before !

"Slave" mode here just means that your aircrafts heading will follow the camera. There is no "lock" on the target.

I guess another indication that the Vivianne does not actually lock onto a target is the fact that you can Steer the Missile during flight.

This can be useful when a target is moving OR if for example a vehicle moves in front of your target (between you and your target), you can steer the missile up and over or around the front vehicle to hit the target vehicle.

It's kind of fun steering a Hot3.
