Once you use selected altitude hold, you can't go back

Title says it all really. Once I use selected altide hold once (it works fine) no matter what set the dial to wheneve I try and use plain current altitude hold it will try and hold the altitude written on dial. I am not touching the selected altitude hold button. Really annoying if you just want a straight level flight
