Hi,

I run a pretty old rig and am ready for a new one, I dont want to destroy the one I have but thought I would have a go at overclocking.

What is this saying, is the machine running at 4.3ghz ie. did I overclock it, or not?

Thanks

Your specific 2600k is of the last and best batch ever made iirc, same one as I had.

It may even run 5G if you work it properly and cooling is plenty but I would not push it past 1.35v vcore for daily use.

My own one ran 4.8 with 1.35v and 5 with 1.40 but got VERY hot at 5G when priming or such, 4.8 was no issue until it died suddenly waahaaa.

4.7 is also ok, very nice...after all thoe years they still rock pretty damn hard.

I think you can target a 10% increase in performance every generations, with some exceptions.

I am less optimistic on that IPC gain with 10% per generation. That would mean 5 x 10x gain going from i7-2xxx->3xxx->4xxx->6xxx->7xxx->8xxx.

I tested my own i7-7700k CPU against my old i7-2600k CPU, both at 5GHz. The difference was "200" points in Passmark, 2800-Points IPC Benchmark for the 2600k and 3000-Points for the 7700k. The 2600k is less than 10% slower than a 7700k and your core is based on that 7th gen core as well iirc. So the numbers should pretty much be valid for you too.

The difference comes with the overall new plattform, memory, PCH link, etc... and the felt boost is far greater than those mere 200 Points in Passmark benching.

Sure is, I got 7 years from mine before she passed away. The one thing I noticed is how ultra quite my rig is now compared to the overclocked Sandy.

Nahh, that solely depends on the cooler, I actually use the same waterblock for 115x sockets and it runs at 0dB most of the time, no rad-fans on/needed for everyday use.

It is indeed. I have 2700K 5Ghz stable with 50 bucks thermaltake cooler. No need to buy the newest overpriced intel chip. With GTX 1080 I have solid 60fps and all setting almost max 1.5.7 and 2.x!

A toast on those Sandy Bridges still going strong

I wouldnt run this 7700k if my 2600k was still alive, 100% NOT !
