I frequently encounter various issues in Landing Nav mode. So much that I would not relay trust it in IFR conditions. As these are difficult do document, I try to collect and describe them here as they appear.

-Yesterday I made an TILS approach on runway 09 at Ford airport, Normandy map. I was clearly under TILS guidance but no TILS light was illuminated.

-Today I made an approach at Beny-sur-Mer, runway 35. Overhead LS in Nav mode. Then switched to Landing Nav, turned to LB1 and made a flip-flop for a short approach. Approaching the landing circle for the short approach, the HUD gave directions to initiate the turn. Flying along the approach circle, all navigation information on the HUD frequently disappeared for several seconds (only the flight path marker and the altitude remained visible). The ADI direction needle seemed to be stuck in the middle and did not react on me tightening or widening the turn. When the navigation information on the HUD reappeared, it was not visible long enough for me to completely understand in which phase of the approach the system though I was, before all was lost again.

-I aborted the Landing Nav approach and switched to Landing P/O. As I approached the runway, the runway center line symbol on the radar system seemed to be stuck. See screenshot (sorry for the quality, it was in VR):

Note how the waypoint marker sits right in the middle of the runway marker, with the line extending both above and below. A condition which should never appear as far as I have seen in the manual.

Landing Nav Issues

Hi! Thanks for the excellent report and all the others. I’ve had a hard time keeping up to all your new posts but will look into the other issues eventually. This particular issue you describe here is already resolved since I’ve been working with the land nav system the past few weeks. There where multiple issues, as for example north facing runways not working, the switch from turn command to guiding on the approach path not happening when it should as well as the turn command not being centered around the VVI as it should. Thanks for all the help, really appreciate it! <3

See the screenshot below. This was taken in the approach circle, just after passing LB1 and following directions for the turn to the runway heading. Notice the variometer indicates a descend (the altitude was indeed decreasing). Note how the flight path marker incorrectly indicates a climb instead. A 16 kts wind was present.

1. Close to L1 in LAND NAV mode and heading towards LB1.

2. Make a flip-flop (LAND P/O -> LAND NAV). System correctly switches to LF1.

3. Switch the nav system to NAV and then back to LAND NAV. This should restore an approach towards LB1. This doesn't work, the system returns to LF1.

4. Make a flip flow again (LAND P/O -> LAND NAV). System switches back to LB1. I think this is not correct either, according to the manual a flop-flop should always result in a short-approach.

Edit: Tested at Nellis.

In a TILS approach to Nellis, about 6 km from the field the commanded flight path makes a sudden jump and then displays bogus information. Sometimes it switches back and forth between correct and false flight path, sometimes it shows false path until touchdown (the case in the screenshots below). The HUD also never switches to the descent rate mode before touchdown.

Hi Mbot! Thanks for the reports! The very last one there is probably this issue don’t you think?

NAV Landing mode switches from glide slope to horizontal if below glide slope
