Finally! Native DCS & Direct Mode SteamVR experience on the iPhone!

Hi guys,

I have an iPhone 6S Plus and I've always wanted to experience VR with it so I tried Trinus along with some other stuff and the conclusion was a limited VR experience that I wasn't really happy with. I have been waiting for VRidge which allows you to cheat your PC into thinking that your cardboard VR is a Rift and utilises SteamVR but the wait is forever for the iOS version.

I've discovered yesterday that there's a new app out called iVRy which does exactly the same as VRidge but is a native iOS app (they are working on the Android version at the moment).

See

It supports full USB 3.0 tethering and makes full use of your Plus resolution. It also has 4:4:4 subsampling and everything looks amazingly really crisp and clear (I was able to read everything in ED). FPS is 90Hz and the head tracking rate is 100Hz. It also supports on full native SteamVR Direct Driver mode.

I tried it with ED and the experience was awesomely impressive so I excitedly loaded up DCS with it and was taken to the VR hanger. Wow I could almost reach out and touch the wing!!

This is my issue...

When loading DCS in VR mode, the window on the desktop is half the size of the phone resolution (ie the same size as a single eye in the headset). So the phone is set to 1920x1080 and the desktop window therefore opens at 960x1080 (because I get 960px per eye). This looks great in the headset, however because the desktop window is only 960px, the mouse clicks don't work in the VR hanger after 960px to the right. I can see everything there and can click on the options below (to the left) of 960 but nothing after that point. Because of this, I cant select the menu buttons to the right on the hanger menu, even if I turn my head to the right and look directly at them.

I've sent a message to the developer of iVRy explaining the problem but wondered if anyone else here could try it and find a solution?

Seeing the VR hanger in all it's glory but not being able to play because I can't click far enough to the right is so frustrating!!

Thank you all!

Dazzy.

Thanks for sharing this. I downloaded and gave it a try. I got the VR hanger up, but similar to you, I can't get the mouse on the screen to click anything. On my monitor I can see the mouse try to move into the DCS window, but it then drifts to the sides... almost like the headset is controlling it.

Sorry I can't help your issue, but wanted to say thanks and add my woes to this for debugging purposes.

Thanks for the reply!

I don't get any mouse drift and I'm using the option to control the mouse separately from my head tracking using the Use Mouse option in the VR menu. I can click on the 3 at the top (modules, settings, profile), all of them along the bottom, up to the FC3 icon but not any to the right of that. The biggest problem is that I cant click on the menu to the right so can't start the game. The mouse cursor will go over everything fine (with no drift) but nothing is highlighting that I've mentioned above.

If your mouse is moving on the desktop, outside the game area on screen, you need to recapture it, move it over the game window and click.

Thanks Nodak!

I can confirm that I'm not having an issue as you've described. I'm also Alt+Entering so I'm in full screen and I've got the 'Cursor Confined to Game Window' enabled in the VR settings.

Just to give you all an update on this...

I've now contacted the developer of the app who is going to download DCS and see if they can figure out what is going on here. Hopefully they will be able to identify and fix this issue fairly quickly.

IMHO I think it is an issue to do with screen resolution mismatch. Each eye is 960px, and the desktop Window that comes up is clearly 960px too so it's almost as if DCS won't see anything beyond 960px on the screen even though it is visibly there. I can see everything when moving my head around, and the mouse will move over everything. Its just not highlighting anything that the mouse is over if it's beyond the 960px point (I think). Odd and very frustrating! I purchased this app specifically for DCS and can't use it yet grrrrrrr! :(

Update from me as well.... I got the mouse working now (I hadn't turned it on in the settings), but experiencing the same issue as DazzyB currently, everything to the right is unclickable :(.

Hope the developer has some luck!

Awesome! So glad you fixed that! If only we could figure out the unclickable area issue now...

Well, I've managed to get this working now guys!

This is what I've done...

1) Ensure that SteamVR is not running on the PC

2) Launch iVRy on the iPhone then click on the Settings cog icon at the top

3) Scroll down to Driver Mode and ensure that it's set to the right (Virtual Mode)

4) Launch SteamVR and wait for it to display the ready status, then start DCS

Viola!

I've now contacted the developer and made him aware of this problem. Virtual mode may affect the performance so he really needs to fix this. I'll post an update here once he's responded.

Please also note that the screen will go black for a short time while the simulation is loading. Be patient - it will load!

In the mean time, enjoy DCS in VR!

About the unclickable area... You tried going FullScreen? Every VR User has to do that, otherwise he wont be able to click on some buttons on screen?

And with FullScreen, I mean pressing Alt + Enter, not just the settings.

Yes, it wasn’t that which was causing the problem - the Driver Mode setting needs to be set to ‘Virtual’ in the iVRy settings on the iPhone. It works perfectly now!

Thanks for the reply!

Sounds good. Maybe I'll give it a try.

Oh you really really should! I can't fly in flat 2D on a panel any more!!

For a real amazing experience, you should try the Freefly headset at https://freeflyvr.com/ - it has a 120 FOV (higher than the rift and vive) so you are totally immersed in the game and don't see any 'edges' through your headset. It's really cheap too and is one of the lightest and most comfortable headsets you can get for mobile VR. I use an iPhone 6S and the resolution is great - I can make out all the instruments with ease and VR zoom is a breeze when clicking the buttons and switches.

Let me know what you think but I personally love it!!

Slightly (well, *very*) off topic - but last night I was trying Alien Isolation in VR with the Freefly. The experience is *truly* terrifying! I didn't want to even move and spent 10 mins just hiding under a desk with my adrenaline peeking. VR is definitely the way to go and I so look forward to what's coming in the future, especially in terms of DCS and X-Plane 11!

If you have an iPhone, you *really* need to try it! Get a FreeflyVR headset for true immersion thought (I've tried a few and this really is leaps ahead).
