S!

Unfortunatly I burnt my processor (i7 2700K@4,8GHz) last saturday :( It has been working fine overclocked since 2014. Friend of mine have i7 6700K on Asrock z170 Extreeme6 still on warranty for 400 Euro. Do you think I should go for it ? I'm sure I would gain few FPS more :) My other specs in signature.

Thank you,

Piotr.

Good deal, I`d do it for 400.

Had that CPU for like 8 weeks and it rocked DCS quite well:thumbup:

BTW: same happened to my i7-2600k-Sandy last year. 4.8@1.35V for 2 years and bang, burned thru.

Still, the best CPU I ever owned and it will be hard to top that value, for either AMD or Intel.

edit:

delidding is a good thing for that CPU, they really get hot when overclocked.

I burned my 6700k tho I got it replaced by Intel with no questions asked !

You do realize that you also need new DDR4 modules ??!!

Well, 6thgen Intel wants DDR4.

It also supports LowVoltage DDR3 iirc, but that is mostly used in UltraBooks etc.. to save some Watts.

Please check the Asrock website and make sure what RAM modules it accepts. I bet its DDR4 only for a gamers board.

DDR4 prices slightly eased off last week, tho they still cost a fortune. Any 16GB kit is around 200€ +/-...very much up&down

Hello,

I'm sorry Pedro for what happened to you and for hijacking (shortly) this thread.

How can one know when a CPU has burnt?

I imagine that the PC won't start. In that circumstance, how to be sure that the cause is the burnt CPU?

You swap out the suspected wrecked CPU for another known working one (of similar spec - socket/generation)

PC boots with replacement CPU , means your original CPU was wrecked

PC doesnt boot with replacement CPU , your mobo could be wrecked or something else might be duff

Thanks Johnny. So the day my CPU burns, I will be unable to identify the cause because I don't have a spare CPU. This also encourages me to stay at 4.3 Ghz as of now and not OC it too much.

To find hardware issues you often need the same socket mobo, ram, cpu, gpu, psu to start swapping things in and out.

actually you need a slave, a PC that you know that works that will test any GPU, drive, DDR that fits etc...

As soon as you dont have a matching component to exchange you are left with guessing, more or less.

With one PC and one error you are screwed. At least a 2nd machine to surf the net, best another ATX machine to change parts with! the 50/50 game....

It's not so black or white situation here I'm afraid. I can still boot in to os but every time I have a crash after 5-6 mins. I have changed the mobo and it's doing the same. Every case might be little different.

I have always used power supplies with 50% more watt/power spec than needed. I have never overclocked any of numerous processors I have owned. I have never had one fail. Both Intel and AMD. If I felt that I needed more processor power, I purchased a faster processor. Overclocking rarely increases noticeable output enough to warrant the price of a new processor. The added expense of water-cooling and other add-ons to allow somewhat safely overclocking is not financially justifiable vs just going to a faster processor to begin with.

Find out what your computing need is to run your programs. Then select a system/processor to match that. If you plan on keeping that system for several years then you must realize newer software will make your current system obsolete. You can plan for that by purchasing a system that will probably be sufficient to run software in the foreseeable future......2years or so. IMHO

Then if something wrong happens I am indeed screwed, as most people probably. I have a very old (Pentium) PC as a backup but parts won't exchange with my current PC of course.

Amazing that you can start Windows with a dead CPU, Pedro.

It worked since 2014 oc at almost 5Ghz. from 3,5 to 4,8Ghz, math is easy. This processor was fast as hell :music_whistling:

I get your logic lazduc, makes sense indeed. On the other hand, the vast majority of people with a K processor and is gaming / simming, is also overcloking it. Because... "K" processor are meant to be overclocked?

OK I don't want to divert too much the original purpose of this thread.

that's why lot of people delid the heat shield on the CPU and replace the factory thermal compound with something much better. I gave it a shot and my CPU temperature dropped by 10 deg. Takes 45 minutes. Highly recommended as cheap insurance if overclocking.

It would be nice If anyone who has experienced processor dead/half dead could share his opinion why and what actually happen. What was the cause and effect and how was it diagnosed?

Yeah, I ordered the kit as well and I already have 3 CPU's waiting for delidding, my pal's 4th-gen i5, my 7700k and the coming 8700k.

The drop in temp is significant with liquid metal, 15-20°C is possible with the 8700k I read.

That is world's between.

Tho Simrico, what kills the CPU is not the temp, it's the VOLTZ !!! Don't be fooled by delidding, the wear & tear will be even higher if you then OC further with higher volts.

Usually, if the Die is any good, you can keep the GHz but lower the Volts after delidding, saving another few °C. The cooler the die runs, the less volts it needs for any given speed vs. a hotter die. The spiral works both ways :smartass:

So to save your CPU's life, delid it and try to lower the Volts but keeping the GHz. You may even go 1 step higher in speed with even lower Volts, some could do that I have read, but you only know it after you have done it.

Thanks BitMaster. Later in December, I'll have some time to try to push my CPU to 5.1GHz and see what happens. :)

Rest assured, I'm staying at my current 4.3 Ghz, I don't want to do wild stunts as I don't have the skills for delid and voltage ;)
