MBot Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 I know we had this discussion in the past, but I have been thinking alot about ground targets lately. Will those very nice infantry models shown on the latest MANPADS and Hummer screenshots be used to create more infantry based objects for Black Shark ? I know that Lock On doesn't feature a sceleton system and therefore "real" moving infantry will most likely not be possible on the current engine. But these infantry models have such a great potential for "semi-static" infantry units ( like the Igla/Stinger guys ). That wonderfull TOW launcher on one of the HUMVEES just cries out for a disembarked TOW-Team. Or the DShK 12,7mm MG that we see on some of the new tanks would be so great as a seperate tripoded AA-gun. Ideal for rebel positions. Then I can think of various mortar teams and RPG/LAW soldiers. And of course single soldiers with Ak-47/74, RPK, M-16 and M-60. Even as single units, like the Stinger/Igla, these would be great to create the small arms fire dimension of air-ground work. Just to reinforce the importance of small arms fire ( rifles and light MGs, not AAA ): Of the 10 RAF Harrier operating over the Falklands 3 were damaged to various degree and one was lost to small arms. So while I can see that organic infantry is unprobable for BS, I realy hope for some more "static" infantry units. So what is planed in that regard for BS ?
Vekkinho Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Good question! I tried making CAS missions with complex ground units to simulate something similar to real battlefield. I deployed scouting APCs, mortar sites, howitzer sites and tanks, resupply trucks and armoured vehicles on the map. The only problem was in lazy LO's engine. Any bigger amount of AI in the map leads to too much lag to make it playable. In Black Shark we'll have more polys on most vehicles, skins of higher resolution and we'll fly closer to the ground respectively. MBot's recent mods (object packs) call for higher skill level of ground AI and possibility to have more of them in the map without drastic FPS drop. I know it's hard to make movable AI human but objects like mortar team, scouting infantry units (used to laser mark targets), parachute units or static downed pilots (for SAR) might be a good idea. MBot Posted January 29, 2007 Author Posted January 29, 2007 Thats at least something :) But with those nice TOW's, DShK's already modeled, it would be a crime not to extract them into seperate units...
