I have flown Wiggen for awhile now and have observed that contrary to HUDs in other aircraft, the hud display symbology is rolling across the hud when turning left and right. I.E. to fly towards a waypoint you turn the aircraft until the hud symbology shows up in the hud.

That is ok as long as you are heading towards a waypoint or a programmed target.

But when entering a dogfight the hud symbology disapears out of sight most of the time.

I have been through the manual but can't find any clue there.

Any help would be apreciated. Thanks!

Have you switched to dogfight mode? That means selecting the Sidewinder (RB-24/RB-74) by either selecting it on the weapon selection knob or by using the fast select key on the throttle. It will at least give you a target circle that shows where the missile is aiming and follows the target when the missile is uncaged and locked.

If you select the missile throught the weapon selection knob and put the radar in ANF mode you will also get range data from the radar which will lock automatically on the target if there is no ground clutter.

Apart from that there is not really any HUD indication that is needed in a dogfight.

What is the "fast select key on the throttle" called in the control options? Can I bind that to my HOTAS?

As for now I have bound the "Weapon selector knob mode 6 - IR-RB" so my HOTAS but I dont get the target circle by only selecting that and ANF.

Thanks

I think it's called "IR-RB fast select" or something like that.

Thanks for your reply.

I have found the fast select key. Uses it to change between Guns and sidewinders.

But I'am sorry to say I experience the same as iKonane.

No target circle is showing.

Did you press uncage?

Did you press uncage?

This!

It's all in the manual that comes with the module:

The missile seeker head can be uncaged to maintain the lock on the heat source. This is done by pressing the IR missile uncage button on the throttle. When uncaged, the locked target will be indicated by the IR target ring (ITR). The ITR is restricted to being displaced ±6° horizontally and ±10 vertically, however the seeker may be locked on a target outside of the display area. The pilot will have to estimate the position of the target based on the position of the ITR.

[...]

RB 24 / 74 Checklist

  1. Weapon selector: IR-RB (or press IR missile fast select).
  2. Sight mode selector: Set target wingspan.
  3. Master mode selector: Mode ANF.
  4. Radar mode selector: Mode A1 or A2.
  5. Aim at the target visually and engage radar lock by pulling the fix trigger to the first detent (T1)
  6. Confirm sidewinder growling tone. Adjust volume if necessary.
  7. Uncage seeker if needed (manoeuvring target).
  8. Trigger: UNSAFE and fire on sidewinder steady tone, if distance line indicates inside of max range or wing span markers envelop the target (when not using radar ranging).
  9. Trigger: SAFE and master mode: NAV.

Yes and inn that text lies the ansver.

Found it out last night by chance.

To get a closer look at an instrument down in the cockpit I lovered my seat.

When finnished had a snap look at the HUD, and there it was the Sidevinder targeting clues.

Problem solved.

When using the "center view" function, the seat rises to a position where you can not see them.

So now when I'am dogfighting I have to lower my seat manually, and then I can use the Sidewinder targeting clues. But if I acidentally presses the "center view" function, the seat rises again.

So thats probably what they mean by this:

The ITR is restricted to being displaced ±6° horizontally and ±10 vertically, however the seeker may be locked on a target outside of the display area.

And no it does not help to lower or rise the Hud.

Uncaging displays the little target lock circle on the bogey, but you have to se the target clues first.

Well, have you tried raising your HUD instead? Because it sounds like it is still in the takeoff position. To raise your HUD click on the black lever just below the HUD on the left.

When raising the HUD the 2 lover dots in the triagnle just about shows up at the top of the hud. Right at the edge.

What triangle? The ITR is a circle and it shows up where the missile is looking at. If it is not locked on something it should be boresighted and well within the HUD. It can only leave the HUD if it is locked on a target that moves out of the HUD.

I have added "Seat Adjustment - Down" and UP to my joystick. I always lower my seat when I have the head seakers active. I also need to lower my seat for landings.

That's weird. I don't have these problems :dunno:

That is odd. I have to raise my seat during landings.

I was mainly speaking about dogfight mode, as I can always see the ITR when it is boresighted and my HUD is raised. Unless of course the missile seeker is locked on a target which is outside of the HUD.

But I also never need to raise my seat during landings. I either lower the HUD or move my head a bit, but it is never that far off, that I would have to make seat adjustments.
