I mostly use the Caucasus map, but recently I've been playing about with the Nevada map, doing some sight seeing, and the Harrier seems to have a real problem maintaining a hover without either running on fumes, , or having the J ringed on the hud.

I do have gunpod and two winders, is the margin really that tight IRL in those conditions?

I've also noticed in 2.5 the hover position of 82 degrees is producing a noticeable rearward accelleration rather than how it has previously been the sweet spot for hovering.

Remember, Nevada tends to be a generally hotter environment - as such your engine is 'weaker'.

The Harrier is not designed to hover with a full combat load + fuel. You need to be relatively light to maintain a hover. A gunpod + 2x AIM-9M should be possible on a fuel load of say 0-40% max.

I can't comment on your 3rd point as I'm yet to attempt a hover in 2.5.

Yeah, I kind of did mention that....

If you read my post again you may notice "running on fumes", "gun pod and 2 winders"

If it is that lacking in power IRL then it would seem borderline unsafe to fly in any environment like that.

It is reasonably marginal.

anything under 21'000lbs is hoverable. But bear in mind the empty air frame is what 14'500? Plus 500 for water and say I dunno a couple of thousand for gunpod + ammo + sidewinders and all of a sudden 3000lbs of fuel and you are at max weight for hover. Which would be full water and giving it everything.

Its pretty much as it should be.

Also keep in mind Nevada is not at MSL. Depending on your T/O position you can go from 2500ft to 5000ft.

According to Michael Franzak, a former Marine Harrier pilot stationed at Bagram (4800ft), their machines weren't able to do vertical landings due to insufficient engine power especially during summer. During his one year deployment every single landing of his VMA-513 was rolling or conventional.
