I noticed that every time a plane type is taken for the first time on a multiplayer, you get a slow loading phase when you load your cockpit. You see it all black, textures are loaded, and so on.

But on top of that, there are also other consequences. Clients also need to laod those 3d/textures apparently, no matter there they are on the map, and they also freeze completely uintil they do. If someboddy has a classic hdd, you can imagine this implies a guaranteed crash of their flight (the plane crash). Even with SSD often it's enough to smash your face on the ground.

The same thing I noticed is, when these plane types are already present in a server and you are joining using a client, same thing you have to do on the start screen: load all of them. That's why you have to wait to return with fluid fps until all is loaded. And why it often takes a lot of time to join a server that has a lot of clients using sparse different plane types.

This is for plane model/types, so once I take an A-10C one time, and a wingman takes the 2nd, the 2nd has no effect on me/clients/server. But as soon as another takes a different plane, that needs to be loaded from all clients again.

Maybe placing on the ground some inactive models could help this in the mission editor, making everybody load all crafts at startup. Very slow for load, but maybe can avoid the freeze in mid flight.

Use AI versions, of player aircraft, pre-loaded into the mission i.e.

• Uncontrolled

• Ramp Start

• Indestructible (and perhaps invisible)

• Hidden on the map

• At an unused Airbase/Parking Slot or as scenery

It's a technique used by big server missions in 1.5 and seems to be mandatory for 2.5 ATM, if I want to avoid disconnecting a co-op client when I'm the host and take a new aircraft.

There's still lag when the cockpit loads, but it's not as bad.

As you say, it makes the mission slower to load and the extra AI aircraft have a performance hit (why I mostly never used it) - but is far better than dropping/disconnecting clients.
