Just a simple one for a Monday morning guys.

Can anyone tell me why I can't see the dust effect on landing the Huey? I thought it was a mod but can't seem to find it.

it is not a mod. it is default feature. if you land on ground (not farp or runway, parking , taxi etc) and don't see dust effect, then you have a problem.

I guess it's broken then. :(

I've only ever flew the Huey in 2.5 and because I thought it was a mod, I didn't bother to query it. I can't say I miss it being as I've never had it. Not sure I like the way it comes into the pit anyway...however...

Ran a repair, no change!

2.5 - flew in all three terrains - no dust.

2.2 - dust is there so no issues with my graphics settings.

1.5.8 - no dust.

Makes me wonder what else is broken n my system. I've had numerous problems that seem to make controlling aircraft way more difficult than it should be. 2.5 was a fresh install. Any ideas?

Did you clear out your fxo and metashader folders, in Saved Games?

Yes, all deleted and I watched them reload back in, no difference.

I did go over to the coast and tried to put my skids into the sea. There was a huge geyser type spray that covered the whole of the Helo...I thought it had exploded but alas, no normal spray at 3-5 feet and no dust anywhere on or above ground.

I'll check tonight when I get on, interesting.

Well I tried a simple mission that I made recently and guess what no dust effect but as this is a new install of everything and i had dust since installing, I hadn't added wind and specifically dynamic weather which I added only on the weekend.

So I made another mission on the Caucasus map with Gazelle L in VR and lots'o'dust added wind nothing crazy still dust but when I added dynamic weather no dust. I have tried this a couple of times now with the same result with Gazelle, Mi8 and Huey,.. Interesting.

At least with no dust you get to see the near field grass move like there is wind across it. :D

I created a new mission using the Gazelle but still get nothing. Played around with weather (not touched dynamic) but nada!!

It is nice to see the grass blowing in the wind but something is weird. Why would my system show nothing in 2.5 but something in 2.2? Why does yours work as long as you don't use dynamic weather? Something governs these things and it would be nice for someone to say, "It's your ***** file, it's corrupt!' or 'You need to turn on ******* in your graphics card settings.'

And why has no one else reported it? Because it's my curse....lol.

Maybe this thread could do with being in the main 1.5/2.5 section being as it is nothing to do with the Huey. Is there any way a Mod could move it or is it better I repost?

Have you tested it well away from an airfield, several miles away just out in a field somewhere?

I was testing this out today in a Huey on the Normandy map at Needs Oar Point airfield. There wasn't any dust when I landed in the vicinity of the airfield, even when landing on the grassy areas around the runway. But when I flew away from the airfield a mile or so, there was plenty of dust when landing. I don't know if that's true at all airfields.

I was flying with a friend just after 2.5OB came out and he wasn't able to see the smoke and fire from the new smoke objects you can place in the editor. Turned out that his graphics settings were to blame and I think I remember he turned on deferred shading to see the effects. Could your issue be something similar?

Yes, landing well away from airfields and FARPS etc. I see nothing! :(

Deferred shading is on. I have a 1080GTX and it is set to the optimal settings as has been suggested in the Forums.

It doesn't explain why it works in 2.2 NTTR and not in 1.5.8 or 2.5. There might be something common between the 1.5.8 and 2.5 being as 2.5 was initially an upgrade of 1.5.8 but I have deleted 2.5 and done a fresh install, without 1.5.8.

Sorry I blew my 1.5 and 2.2 away when I reinstalled windows etc so can't test those anymore.

Can you post system specs and sittings that may help, but at this point apart from what

I found with dynamic weather and VR there doesn't seem to be a reason for your issue.

Wait, you're complaining about not seeing the dust? You can have half of mine...

Ha Ha ha,.. I know, much nicer watching the grass in the field waving around with the wind.

Hahahahaha!

Complaining because it means something is not equal. I like being the odd one out but I don't like when things are broken.

If I can find out why, then maybe you guys can turn yours off, if you want to? It works both ways.

How does the version (1.5.8, 2.2, 2.5) know which saved games folder to use?

In saved games, I have a DCS, DCS.openalpha and DCS.openbeta.

I installed some mods for use in 2.5 and it seems they are being used by 1.5.8 too. This could be part of the reason why the dust is not there in 1.5.8 and 2.5.

Posted

Sorry for the quick succession of messages but I have answered my own question as it seems dcs_variant.txt was the culprit for setting the saved games folder. It contained openbeta so I deleted it and my 1.5.8 started using the DCS folder in saved games. How do I know? No modded liveries and DUST!!!

So now, I have to see what is in Saved Games\DCS.openbeta that is not in any of the others. Could this be the answer?

Meh seriously the dust thing is well nice but maybe over egged a little and really I would like to have some of it back but it's no deal breaker. There are more important fish to fry. ATM. ;)

Okay, I think I've cracked it.

I looked in a file called options.lua, which is kept in the Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Config folder. Comparing that with the options.lua files in the other version's directory, there was a line missing:

["effects"] = 3

so I made a copy of the file just in case and I put the line in.

EUREKA!! Dust effects and water effects in 2.5.

I tried changing the value to see if it dampened down the effect but it just switched the dust off again. Don't know if it's a decimal representation of a binary number equating to different effects being switched on and off but it's a mystery why my file didn't contain that line.

Congrats it's usually something simple, the complex part is finding it,.. :D

It would be interesting to see what else that "effects" value controls.
