Is it a mission that came with the game that's causing the error?

The mission uses lua scripting in it and there is a syntax error. Most likely at line 1. Basically there is most likely a statement in there where '=' is missing in the code, so it doesn't run correctly.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

No, its a mission put together in mission editor, but without any manual scripting. Just placement of icon units.

I get those sometime, most often, in my case, if I simply take a long time to put the mission together, or leave the ME open with a mission a long time. Other cases, more rare, is when I make changes to missions, after certain amount of edits, the mission file goes bad, and nothing I can do to rescue it. It either crashes on start or works badly and freezes. Thus far I fail to see a common thread,as to cause.

I just started to have a very similar issue. No scripts but an error message saying

[string "XYZ"]:1: '=' expected near '<eof>'

Weird. The mission starts but I only see the loading screen while I can hear that the mission was loaded and selecting F2, etc. changes the view of planes, etc.
