A little help...

Recommended Posts

Ok guys, I need a little help to see if my fears are correct. This game has probably outstripped my meager system and it's time to start saving for a new gaming computer as the game is crashing on startup after going to 2.5

Please review my crashlog and see if I'm right...

8gb ram and using an 860m will be a struggle unfortunately

the 860m shares some of your system ram which is already minimum for DCS

try my crash advice below and use low settings ingame you may be able to play then.

Many thanks for the assist. Been playing the open beta earlier before going with the newest of 2.5 just yesterday and haven't been able to play since. Figure it's time for a new system soon anyway but wondering if moving over to the new 2.5 I've fouled up somewhere.

Same problem, worked once yesterday but now crashes on startup.

got 16gb ram so its not that.

Log would seem to point to a video card driver issue or your primary video card is the integrated Intel CPU 5000 series that wouldn't meet minimum specs for DCS, at no stage does the log show the descrete Nvidia 960m video as being initialized, this is most likely were the system has crashed trying to do the first Direct X calls.

Remedy:

  1. Make sure that the nvidia 960m is driving your main screen for windows and gaming.
  2. Disable the CPU's onboard GPU or only use for a second screen.
  3. Investigate the Nvidia 960m driver for issues, test with GPU-Z and other benchmarks and re-install or update it if need be.

Hi Ian,

Looks like it was a Nvidia issue, for some reason the control panel was not loading up, got the NVIDIA settings not available message when right clicked on screen

Checked drivers, all up to date, went through device manager to double check, all ok. Turned off computer, unplugged my 2nd monitor and re started. Voila a right screen click showed the control panel!

Checked processor, left as automatic select, double clicked DCS 2.5 and it worked!

Will now test again with my 2nd screen plugged (HDMI port) in but you were correct processor issue!

Thank you so much for your help!

Ok, looking at my drivers for NVIDIA I upgraded recently to the 391.35 driver for the 850m card I have. Things seem to work for a bit then this happens this weekend after going to 2.5. I'm not sure what happened but now the 2.5 won't work with it and neither will some of my other games (MWO for example). After rolling back the driver to 368.39 I at least get into a mission in 2.5 before it crashes. Most recent crash log should be here to look at. If you get the time let me know what you see in the log....

Lots of errors in your log file, first one says metashaders out of date, and then continues with can load metashaders.

Have a look in your saved games file there should be a metashader folder, have a look when it was created, should be the same date that you downloaded 2.5 (Well mine was). Sorry but that's it for my knowledge!

Questions:

  1. Are you running any mods in DCS ???
  2. When changing your nvidia drivers, did you disable your antivirus program and use DDU to completely remove all traces of nvidia drivers and software before reloading the other version ???
  3. How are your monitors setup, the Nvidia 850m should be running the first monitor setup in windows, onboard INTEL CPU's GPU should be running the second screen, recommend disabling the second screen temp whilst fault finding ???

Remedy:

  1. DCS: I would run the DCS cleanup and repair options to clean up DCS as the log indicates their may be some errant code in there, most likely a mod causing a trigger failure, quickly followed by a failure of a Nvidia software component.
  2. DCS: Might also try renaming your saved games folder temp for testing.
  3. -
  4. Download and install DDU cleaner and have Nvidia drivers accessable for installation.
  5. Nvidia driver: I would turn off any antivirus at all stages of these procedures and uninstall all nvidia software first such as "Nvidia Geforce experience", "Nvidia HD Audio", "Nvida Physx" and last by not least the drivers and reboot.
  6. Once again turn off the antivirus, check "Control Panel -> Program and features" for nvidia installed software and uninstall drivers and any other nvidia stuff that has reappeared, once uninstalled, run DDU cleaner and use the recommened top button on menu to completely remove all traces of Nvidia software, as if it never existed on you machine and then reboot computer.
  7. On reboot it should detect your nvidia card as new hardware and show up in the device manager as a standard vga card.
  8. Here we go again, disable antivirus until you reboot, run the Nvidia drivers package you wish to use, (I don't recommend the latest 390.x series as they have a few issues that only compound the problems you may be having, stick with 388.71 or there abouts) and install the options you normally do, also suggest do a clean install option.
  9. Once drivers installed and completed, reboot and re-test system with games and dcs.

So, after much downloading and trying different drivers I found one that gets DCS working again...at least in single player missions. 388.71 for my lame 860m and poor graphix memory seems to make things work quite well. Will have to try some multiplayer yet but thanx again for the help with the DDU. The graphics driver hunt and install/uninstall went so much easier with it!
