tmdgm Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 What strategies do most employ with firing missiles? I guess 2 questions? 1) Better to be at altitude, above or below? 2) What intervals, i.e. fire missile 1 at 10 nm, fire missile 2 15 secs later at 7 nm etc? Reason I ask is I still play the stock F-15 scramble mission and I swear it seems like I have a better chance of hitting when I am co altitude with the bandit. Every mission I am higher then the Su-34's, they avoid my amraams (I'm thinking higher = more range). On one mission I fired 5 amraams, all within 10nm and only hit 1. The one Su-34, I fired 1 amraam at 11 nm, a second at 8.5 nm, I turned and did a circle, fired a third at ~6-7 nm and missed on all three. The next mission, I went coaltitude and buried both of em with only 3 shots, didn't even need the third. Also, not sure what most due for intervals.
Raptor22 Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I don't know much about best altitude of firing position, so I assume that the higher altitude missile will hit its target easier since it's falling with gravity instead of fighting it. For the missile timing part... firing two close-apart semi-actives don't usually work that well, because when the bandit banks away and sprays out chaff, BOTH the missiles tend to get confused and lose its target. Active missiles closely apart will sometimes work because the first one is always the one your enemy dodges... (RWR indicates its range), but many people tend to get careless after the first because they are busily celebrating it LOL! :P If you are in a Russian bird, I recommend firing off an R27ET first before you fire your semi or active, or you can do it the other way around, so they will never see it coming (unless there are contrails). The beeping and alarms of approaching homing missiles get some people off track of potential heatseekers (I'm one of them )... so you can either do it that way or just time your radar missiles according to his position and awareness... etc. I find firing a semi after an active pretty useful sometimes because they always expect another active but don't see it on RWR... (I fall for that too )... these are just tips... I am no professional at missiles and timing myself anyways... :smartass: Gigabyte GA-M55SLI S-4 AMD64 X2 4600+ 2.4GHz 2GB DDR2 PC6400 800MHz eVGA GeForce7950GT 512MB Samsung SyncMaster 906BW 19" Widescreen Western Digital Cavier 160GB 7200RPM SATA SoundBlaster Audigy X-Fi Creative MegaWorks 5.1 THX 550 TrackIR 4 Pro MS SideWinder Force Feedback 2 :joystick:
tmdgm Posted March 17, 2007 Author Posted March 17, 2007 Thanks for the advice. It's completely frustrating when you fire 5 amraams at 2 su34's and only 1 hits. Needless to say, you're pretty much out of missiles and die.
GGTharos Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 It's an issue with chaff sensitivity which is fixed in BS - abeit the AI can still pull off the perfect notch! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
tmdgm Posted March 17, 2007 Author Posted March 17, 2007 So this is a bug? But it doesn't seem to happen all the time, just seems to happen more times than it should. That's interesting because I would play the same missions and have missiles, Amraam's mind you, just plain ole miss, and it's usually 2 or 3 of em. Then, I play the same mission and I get hits by doing the exact same thing. Didn't know if it is a random generator or something. I'm not saying I should hit all the time, but just seems way to random. It does seem like the higher I am, the less success I have. I suppose it could be because the SU34's are in the mountains, but the one I'm firing at stays locked the entire time.
VMFA-Blaze Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 Yes the missiles in Lock On don't really function as they should like in R/L... Ed's been working on an Advanced Flight Model for them, but will we see this some time soon???? I guess we'll just have to wait and see if they have enough time and resources to release this in Lock ON..... I know how frustrating this can be as I primarily fly off line... I'm constantly being shot down when I feel that I employed enough counter measures to avoid it.. And when I feel that I have the prefect shot and I miss for no reason, this again is very frustrating.... But there's enough really good things here to just keep me interested, and makes me go back and try again... ~S~ Blaze intel Cor i7-6700K ASUS ROG MAX VIII Extreme G.Skill TridentZ Series 32 GB Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SATA II ASUS GTX 1080/DIRECTX 12 Windows 10 PRO Thrustmaster Warthog Oculus Rift VR
tflash Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 At low level nothing works really for the F-15C/Amraam in Lockon. But at decent altitude, above 18.000 feet, it seems to work well and you can do the tactics by the book. In fact, an F-15C shouldn't venture below 15.000 feet. Even a Viper doesn't do that when it's not absolutely required. In Lockon, certainly online, everyone is wrestling around in murky airspace with the hogs and the frogs. Il'd say stay away there.
