will nvidia 7 series cards like the 7900 run, and take some advantage of directx 10 or will it be useless and stick with directx 9. Can a 7 series card or lower even take it?

 

I know they all say "direct x 9 compatable" but can I still use directx 10 and still get some benifit out of it?

I could be wrong but the 7900 is not DX10 compatible (You need a DX10 compatible video card together with Vista to run DX10)

Don’t worry about it because you will not see any DX10 title soon.

I think you can’t install a DX10 driver even on Vista because your video doesn’t support it!

Anyway the question is not dumb: Vista is optimized for DX10 but is downward compatible with DX9 (thus I think no gain).

With a 8800GTX or 8800 Ultra together with a Quad it is indeed possible that you have gain even with a DX9 game.

The key-question is - some specific features from DX10 will not be acessible with DX9 card.

 

PS. Actually we have Vista installed on a PC with GF5200 vid. :D It's working! :)

All cards 10 years old will run on directX of every version, but if the games requires a higher version than your cards suport, either the game wont run or you will have degraded graphical quality.

 

Some people ran LOMAC on Voodoo 5 cards wich were compliant up to DirectX6 or 7. A similar story hapened to Ge force Cards. they did run but with issues.

 

Aeroscout Your G force will work on DirectX 10 but will run only with fucntion calls that are common DirectX9. It will work on Vista and Flight SIMX but with sepcific DirectX10 Graphical features turned off.

That was thus correct until vista arrived. Now a vcard in order to be vista compatible, therefore DX 10 compatible, needs to have at least T&L (transform and lightning) technology. Notice that being dx10 compatible isn't the same as dx 10 compliant.

I Still got a Geforce 256 here somewhere. Cant remenber exactly when I bought it but I bet its more than 7 years old and it has T&L :)

As far as running DX10... Its only available with Nvidia 8 series..

 

And of course you have to be running Vista as well...
