drmorrish Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 (edited) Hello, First thanks in advance to anyone who answers. So I’m new to flight sims and am learning the f18. When I’m up in the air I’m having to trim the aircraft constantly. Like all the time. When I do make adjustments via the Hat on the tm warthog stick, it’s taking over a minute to get it level with no input. If I make a maneuver or change directions I’m having to do this again? Hand off the stick it will without command Roll left or right. I’ve already checked calibrations and dead zone. I am resetting fcs with flaps in auto and pushing t/o trim on the ground. Stabs to 12 on fcs Page. Is this normal and pilots spend every second literally making trim adjustments? Do they just use the stick to offset constantly? Help. Thank you. Lancel Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 I make very few trim adjustments myself, the only times I do are payload asymmetry or I'm landing. My experience has been the plane basically flies itself, though I did have to very carefully calibrate my stick and deadzones to make sure of that. But that was all I had to do. I believe I have a small deadzone set in game. Payload is the biggest reason why it will start rolling one way or another if it's not balanced between each wing.
drmorrish Posted September 9, 2018 Author Posted September 9, 2018 Thanks Lancel. I have my dead zone set to 4 on the warthog. Ctrl E shows center with no movement. Loading for my two flights were symmetrical. Fuel center, aim 9m x2, full gun, 7m x 2. I was spending way too much time trimming. Would get it level then make a roll or do a climb then when I went to wings level would have to re trim.
Svsmokey Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 (edited) No , it is not normal ! The only time you should be using roll trim is with an asymmetric loadout . What exactly is your roll trim deadzone set to ? I'd try increasing it . Otherwise , is it possible you are trying to fly the aircraft with trim instead of stick inputs ? Trim is generally used to maintain an attitude , not change one . The pitch axis is essentially auto-trimmed in normal flight by the fcs to maintain 1g . So no , a lot of trimming is not normal ! Edit I see the thread has outrun my post ! drmorrish Posted September 9, 2018 Author Posted September 9, 2018 Thanks svsmokey I was not trying to fly with trim only. I will re examine the axis bindings and see what’s going on. I’m also questioning if it’s something I’ve done wrong. I am using custom curves on the left/right thrust axis to match the mil detent. They line up in the quadrant when inspected using ctrl e. But having so little experience I’m looking at everything. Fuel burn and nozzle position and rpm percent match, I don’t know. Good to know this isn’t normal. Flying a real single prop is easier LOL.
drmorrish Posted September 9, 2018 Author Posted September 9, 2018 Found this thread. I’m going to be really pissed if this is a fix. I’ll post results for the next sucker that buys one of these things if it works. I guarantee this is going to be the problem. It explains all the symptoms. I really hope this isn’t the problem because for $250.00 a stick should be centered from the factory. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=65901
defeatist99 Posted September 10, 2018 Posted September 10, 2018 Your speed will effect roll trim as well. If you trim it level at 350 kts it wont be trimmed for level at 400 kts. Are you sure you are maintaining speed through turns and climbs? Because that is probably what's happening.
drmorrish Posted September 10, 2018 Author Posted September 10, 2018 Could be. But I’m spending so much time trying to trim It’s crazy. I would think since delta in KTAS are a part of ACM this would have to be a lot easier. I think it’s a combo of air speed changes and a stick not centered. Mind you pitch trim adjustments are fine. This is all roll. None the less I appreciate the feedback very possibly could be a contributing factor.
David OC Posted September 10, 2018 Posted September 10, 2018 (edited) Like others have said here, there is no need to trim the F18 unless for load-outs asymmetry because of the FBW, in other words it should go where you aim it, unlike the A10 where your are constantly trimming with every change in flight. Fly with a clean jet with no weapons when testing your controls. But if you are even slightly asymmetrical your roll trim needs to be adjusted with every airspeed change, like the A-10. We are talking about roll trim. A change in airspeed means a change in drag and lift on the lighter wing verses the heavy wing that needs to be trimmed out. This is how all planes fly including the F-18. If you fire one AAM off of one wing and not the other you will be trimming your roll for every change in airspeed.

drmorrish Posted September 12, 2018 Author Posted September 12, 2018 TMWH was out of center by over 3000 on the roll axis. Calibration using the TMWH calibration tool fixed the issue instantly. Hey its not like its a $250 stick or anything.
