hitman Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 A sabot round carries enough kinetic energy to do just that. I will tell you that you will be sucked out like salami out of any exit hole after a shell traveling mach 2.5 goes through your tracks. This coming from a former armor driver. Im gonna have to call mythbusters for this one.
GGTharos Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Um, no, actually it doesn't ... and no former armor driver will tell you this one as anything but a joke. If your tank's hit by SABOT and it penetrates, you're going to either die a quick death from spalling, or a slow, fiery death. Assuming you end up dying. hitman Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Actually yes because there is a massive amount of suction behind that shell (if it penetrates as well as exits). And if you have doubts about the vacuum effect behind that shell, take a look-see. http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/navy/docs/fun/part13.htm http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/879415/posts?page=8 And yes, I do know a few tank gunners that have seen this (as I have a few times). If the armor is thin enough at the point of impact and exit, there is more than sufficient amount of suction behind it to suck an unlucky crewmember or two right through.
GGTharos Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 If it creates such a powerful vacuum, then why, in all the tankshot video's I've seen, this man-hurling force isn't anywhere to be seen along the sabot's flight path? Where's the trail of dust that such an incredible phenomenon ought to create? hitman Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 I dunno...ballistics path perhaps? They dont fly 2 feet over the ground. I dont expect to see a jet going the same speed IN A BALLISTIC PATH to cause debris to scatter on the ground. Now if the trajecory is correct (and the tank crew has to button up) then Im positive you could see that dust trail. And if you look closer you CAN see such a phenomenon when the gun fires. Its right in front of the tank and you can see it the exact moment the shot leaves the rifle.
GGTharos Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 You're grasping for straws; this ridiculous change in pressure and the ability to suck sheep and people out a hole does not exist. hitman Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 You're grasping for straws; this ridiculous change in pressure and the ability to suck sheep and people out a hole does not exist. Yeah. Reread the post GG. You can experiment with this: find someone willing enough to let you do this, I advise someone from an artillary crew in a Marine batallion, and you can sit right in front (off to the side of course) and we can see how far youll get sucked downwind. Im quite certain you will wind up someplace where you werent before, albeight a few meters away downrange. As a matter of fact, . Ballistics gel on small arms. What is that you see behind a large caliber round? I see a wake behind it...
EscCtrl Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Hah ignore what I said, I didn't yet read IguanaKing's post which explains itr all :P
