And I thought Air 2 Air Tanking in the F-18 was Hard

After, well maybe not, mastering the Tanking in the Hornet but at least being bale to fill the tanks occasionally I thought I'll take the Mirage up for a spin

I purchased the model a good while back but with one thing and another never really got around to flying it much at all.

How hard can it be?

It's SO Twitchy, which is fantastic for air 2 air maneuvering not so hot for tanking

I've just managed my first fill hooking up to an IL78 at around 225k IAS at 15000

It's weird thing it feels so twitchy to connect, but if aligned when you hit the hose it's more stable than the Hornet during the fill

There are some really annoying things about it like no fader for the HUD (I'm using a mod to at least help a little) and a lack of axes generally then I'm also having difficulty with making a custom view for centering the Track IR, which doesn't slew the HUD (I have a workaround)

But it's an absolute blast to fly, loving it and I've barely scratched the surface:thumbup:

Try A/G FBW mode, helps a lot.

That, and trim "on speed" behind the tanker. AP is very accurate for that (engage AP, set speed, disengage AP).

If you're using IL78, you should push it to 300kt IAS, it will be more comfortable for the Mirage.

But depending on the tanker off course, you may have to do slower (KC-130 can still give me around 230kt).

Oh fantastic tips

The A/G is the Gain Limiter Yes? I knew about it but yet to try tanking with it, guess it limits gain therefore makes the aircraft less twitchy

The trim on Speed I had no idea about, at the moment I'm only scratching at the surface and need to learn more, I never knew about that, I'll certainly give it a try

Many Thanks

Yes, AA/ CHARGES reduce pitch & roll rate and max G.

But also, it will prevent you to get the alarm when external tank start to receive fuel ( because fuel in external tank = CHARGES mode).

You can shut up the alarm by pressing the master caution left of the HUD, but this isn't something you want to do while being connected.

The trim is the biggest help IMHO.

But once trimmed, don't make large speed variation or you will loose the benefit (keep it within +/- 5kt ball park).

I have always been bad at air to air refueling in multiple simulators.

I won't say I'm the best at it, but at list I can hold my own and be efficient with the M-2000 on KC-130.

So if I can do it, it should work for you too

Also if you're in a very light weight configuration (clean jet, low gas etc) then I find popping out the airbrakes makes it much easier to modulate the throttle for holding position, no so over powered.
