Gierasimov Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Hi. With SP mode now available, how does one know when to fire to reach targeted emmiter? Wags said in his video, that if you are Mach 1 at high altitude it can reach targets out at 80nmi. What if my speed is Mach .06 @ 12000 ft and 40 nmi from TGT waypoint where SAM is placed? Is there a diagram, chart or calculation? GGTharos Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 You can do the science yourself for this. Simply put, SP mode isn't meant for range-known targets. It's called 'Self Protect' for a reason ... use appropriately :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Gierasimov Posted February 6, 2019 Author Posted February 6, 2019 Well, I know what SP mode is and that was why I asked. I am sure, I am not the only one who knows that what was shown in the official "DCS: F/A-18C Hornet – AGM-88C HARM SP Mode Introduction" does not convey what SP really is or how it operates, or for that matter that HARM format page is not complete even for SP mode but I choose to say no more on this topic for the reasons known to the majority of this community as I would imagine, and also simply because DCS Hornet is a game and not real life. However, in the video mentioned above the choice of words of the commentary implies that the operating range for the DCS simulation of HARM is a function of speed and altitude. Therefore my question stands as valid. Eddie Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Self Protect mode is not intended for offensive attacks, it’s there purely to allow a defensive return shot against a threat system attacking your aircraft. In such cases you’re not generally going to know the range to the threat, so knowing the weapons effective range is also quite moot. Speed/altitude affect the operating range of all weapons. The only way to determine what impact is has in DCS is to do the tests and share the result with the community if you wish to use SP mode in an offensive role in the interim until TOO/PB are implemented.

Yep, in practice if something's locking you up you can probably hit it from where you are. There's maybe a small envelope with the SA-10/Patriot where you'd be too far away, but everything else should be fine. You can just fly towards the threat, let it lock you (and the HARM will target it), fire at it and then split-s and chaff and you should out-run any missile fired at you and your HARM should reach it.
Gierasimov Posted February 7, 2019 Author Posted February 7, 2019 Fair enough. You don't even need to fly towards target as SP is 360 degree... In DCS there was a Patiot system I just passed overhead, and then SA15, 20nmi in front of me. Somehow HARM thought that friendly PT was bigger threat and would not even lock SA15 (pressing I) just cycled between 3 PT emmiters. GGTharos Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 HARM has done 'funny' things IRL. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
DeltaMike Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Helps to set something up in mission planner and play with it. Among other things you see how SAM sites are laid out. Altitude is good. Range is a trade-off. Closer you are, more likelihood of hitting something. And also the more likelihood of having your hands full. If I know the distance I've had luck shooting targeting radar at about 20mi, more than that is luck, and even then you have to spam it. My experience anyway.
