Drakeshoot Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 (edited) Hi all, When a lock has been attained with Aim-9, is any ranging info give in the pilots cockpit as it can lock at a range that a shot might not be feasible. So although they are different systems would an AIM-9 lock automatically cause JESTER to attempt a radar lock? Cheers! Edited February 9, 2019 by Drakeshoot Spelling
Top Jockey Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 (edited) Hi all, When a lock has been attained with Aim-9, is any ranging info give in the pilots cockpit as it can lock at a range that a shot might not be feasible. So although they are different systems would an AIM-9 lock automatically cause JESTER to attempt a radar lock? Cheers! As far as I know: Range information is only possible with a RADAR lock. The AIM-9 seekerhead can be directed to: - stay caged on Boresight; - scan about the Aircraft Datum Line (Boresight); - slaved to scan about the RADAR; TV (Television Camera Set) or IR sensor. All the above are roughly "directional" slaving; range by itself is presented only with RADAR lock. edit But it doesn't stop there, all the above is only part of the AIM-9 seekerhead "aiming" process (I believe). The AIM-9 seekerhead "lock" on target process, I think is achieved when the pilot presses the "CAGE/SEAM" push button on the left engine throttle... More knowledgeable people feel free to give their insight. Drakeshoot Posted February 9, 2019 Author Posted February 9, 2019 Yep, I get that AIM-9 itself is passive, I should have phrased my question better: Will the RIO attempt a radar lock on AIM-9 lock in order to provide the pilot more info? If it isn’t displayed in the cockpit, will the RIO shout a range?

If it isn’t displayed in the cockpit, will the RIO shout a range? 1 - I think it might be possible given the circumstances, that a RADAR lock would be made after the pilot locked the AIM-9 seekerhead on target... although I believe the opposite would be more likely. 2 - The RIO can shout whatever he see's fit, but as soon as there's a RADAR lock, tipicaly the pilot will have the "diamond" (target box) and a "range scale" information simbols, depicted in his HUD. RustBelt Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 Remember, sometimes you don't want them to know you're throwing a missile up their fart pipe. AIM-9 is good for that.
