Observaitons about Jester Sound by a Sound Engineer.

Just to talk...

I'm a professional Sound Engineer, i do it to earn a living and buy planes... ;-)

Since F14 has crazy reproduction of minor wear on surfaces let me observe that Jester overall sound is not on par. The recordings were made for sure with an hi performance microphone, much more powerful than the one in the helmet, so ! the frequency response in too wide to be realistic. Easy fix, a band pass filter to narrow it down to a more telephone like sound. Can be done with batch processing for larger amount of samples.

2, not as easy fixable as 1, i'm quite sure the voiceover was recorded in an untreated room of say 10 square meters, so not in a dead room/vocal booth or large "studio like" room. The effect is that when the excitement goes up Jester has early reflections and reverb of a house room. Is not in the plane. Hope il helps you super nerds.

I kind of agree that Jester doesn't sound like he's talking to you over IVC from his helmet. It really does sound like he's in the room next to you instead of over a mic.

Fortunately Audacity has filters to make it sound more AM. If Heatblur keeps the audio files as is, I plan on keeping my own set of modified files that I can copy over after every patch.

It really mimics the simulated world in DCS very well. Most of the pilots who fly the F-14 in DCS don't wear helmets and don't sit in a cockpit surrounded by canopy glass. They sit behind a desk, chair or whatever is a room that's usually larger than a fighter cockpit.

That said, Jester does an awesome job at simulated exactly that enviroment. If Jester were to sound like a real RIO is a real cockpit, it breaks the livingroom immersion since virtually nobody knows what the real thing sounds like nor have been in the pilot seat talking to an actual RIO.

For me, leave it as it is, learn to fly with a human RIO and triple your fun.

Maybe it is less realistic but I guess now you understand him better than with an additional bandpass and so on...

Since there are no subtitles (which I am kind of happy about) I am glad that I understand him so well
