Curious if anyone has done any research/testing on this.

When playing in Single Player I assume the game is essentially handling the tasks of both server and client, so depending on the game's architecture it might actually be a net improvement in performance to run a server on another machine on the local network and connect to that, even for single player play.

Really depends on how the game is set up.

IMO yes.

I’m currently hosting a dedicated server (when I’m online) and as a stress test have something like 400 armoured vehicles, a dozen ships, awacs, tankers, loads of aircraft to fly etc. That’s running on what is now my “old” pc. The new PC is running the game client, with seemingly no impact from the server needing to keep track of all of the assets. The initial load time is long on connecting, but post that, it’s ace.
