VR does not work since latest update, please help!

Hi!

Hope somebody can help:

Since the latest DCS update (v2.5.4.30386) it appears that my VR is not working. When DCS starts, it will continue to the regular 2D menu on my monitor, and does not push any image to my VR headset.

I'm using standalone DCS. SteamVR is running in the background. The SteamVR window only momentarily shows DCS.exe is loaded, after which it blanks out. I'm using SteamVR v1.4.18.

I checked the DCS settings menu, the option Enable VR is checked. I checked my headset, it shows and "hangs" on the SteamVR program loading animation.

Does anyone have any tip to get my VR working again?

Thanks

What headset are you using? Yesterday Oculus came out with an update on the public test channel that broke my VR experience as well (I was able to load in VR, but tracking was terribly stuttery and unuseable). I reverted Oculus back to the stable branch and this fixed it.

Also, sometimes when Oculus updates, you'll need to reboot the PC, or sometimes there will be a firmware update that needs to be done to the headset and controllers. This will often cause the problem you speak of.

Just spitballing a few ideas.

Thanks Sandman!

I reverted drivers and DCS workes fine.

I'm on Oculus Quest, streaming PC image with ALVR.

Glad it’s working!

Didn’t know you could do that with quest, how is it?

Yes! With ALVR (free) it is possible to stream DCS to the Quest headset. The quality of the WiFi stream is great and with the 1440p OLED it appears to me and others that PC games really look visually better on it than current consumer PC VR headsets... Although, ALVR is still in alpha development, and with regards to some games, like DCS, it unfortunately shows warping/distortion when moving your head. This is known and will hopefully be fixed at some point. With Riftcat ($) it seems to work OK with DCS so this proves that streaming VR can work awesome for all PC games at some point. Another example, with ALVR and X-Plane 11 this appears to work great.

In case your next question is, would you recommend it as a PC VR replacement/upgrade? Than I would probably say no with a lot of difficulty. Rather buy the Quest as a "gameboy type" console to enjoy standalone VR games with, and than see the PC streaming as a (awesome) bonus.

Hi Scuby,

I am in the market to find a better solution to my cv-1, and found your thread. Is your stance still the same as back in 2019?

last, oculus has the oculuslink now. So hopefully that helps to change the latency or warping?

Thanks!

I have both Rift S and Quest with Link.

I have tested Quest with link with DCS and another combat flight sim , I was quite impressed at how well it handled both.

Excellent! I ordered both yesterday. I hope one of them works for me over this reverb :(

Thank you so much for the response! Do you care to share what your ipd is? Just for comparison.

Well dang. you are soo lucky lol. Having a 55mm IPD sucks! I feel like I will end up with the quest as it has manual IPD adjustment like the cv-1.

Cheers!

Just wanted to update this. I have been testing both the rift S and the quest. They both work great!! The software IPD adj of the Rift S DEFINITELY works better than the reverb does. I could literally use either one. BUT the S seems to run smoother. I can sustain 40FPS with delays in the teens without really much of a settings change. My PD is at 1.9. With the same settings on the quest, I get locked 20 or up to 36 fps. I also seem to get a little bit of a stutter every so often with it. I have a cheaper usb-c cable plugged in to my 2080 super currently.

I am testing the usb-c on my mobo as well as using the anker cable that Oculus suggests in place of their link cable. If I get no stutter with those changes, then I think I may keep the quest. The SDE seems to be basically the same between the two as well. I have yet to fly at night though, so not sure how the screens look between the two in the dark.

Both are definitely an improvement over the cv-1. albeit as thuds chart shows.. not by a lot.

Cheers!

Yes I was very pleased with actually how well my Quest with Link runs DCS.

I still prefer the Rift S but nice to know I have the option of running with Quest should I want or need to.

I would think night would look better with the Quest as those screen handle dark scenes better imho.

I plug my Quest Link into my motherboard's front panel USB-C header. Works a champ.
