I am currently training on the Hornet, and we’re talking 3-4 hours in it so far, i.e. nothing! One question I have though is if there is a landing strip available in any of the maps that resembles the carrier strip? In real life we see pilots training on these at shore, and I figured it would be better to start at shore to practice CASE I before I actually head out to the ship.

Not in the base game. It's been requested about 1000 times and it's in the NTTR Targets mod

Well, unless you want the strip for mission building purposes or you want to follow IRL training procedures, use the carrier to practice CASE I recoveries. In contrast to the real world, you don't die or destroy a 30 million dollar jet if you make a mistake.

You'll also get better training, since you'll be practicing with the real thing and will have to get used to dealing with everything related to landing on a moving, pitching deck.
