First of all, how many servers you want run on it, how many players for server, which technology you prefer? You want run it as standard full client hosting muliplayer session, you want setup a --no-render machine or a dedicated server installation? This is your starting point.

Btw, generally speaking you have to pick up a good amount of RAM, 32GB of DDR4 2666 or faster, the most powerful single core performance you can effort as a CPU, with a good amount of spare cores, like the i7-7700k or similar, and finally a good SSD, for fast run up of the server during mission/reloading or stuff like that, I'll suggest an M2 NVMe.

 

Make sure to protect your server and router/modem with an UPS, to ensure a good stability to your final users.

 

I'll suggest to host your own server locally only if you have a good fiber connection within your "server room" or house.

 

For the operating system, even if it's not officially supported, i'll suggest to pick up windows server 2016, based on my personal experience with several DCS servers ( hosted locally and on the cloud ) it's the best choice atm.

 

If you plan to run --no-render-session, or dedicated server installation, it's all!

If you want host a standard client that host multiplayer session, pick up a decent GPU with at least 4GB of dedicated ram or more, I've used a 1060 with 6Gb with really good performance for more than a year on my previously self hosted FTTH server.

 

Since I'm moving on new house where it's not available direct fiber to my home, i've moved all my servers on cloud ;)
