I did some testing today on Shkval showing distant objects using LOCFG's Optimization

tab. 2000m level flight, weather - clear, daytime. 10x8 (medium) zoom.

Results:

FIRST ADJUSTING ONLY Clipping/Lod and Abject density tabs!

My old "medium" settings -> ~18km "detection" range

*** DOUBLED values of the default High settings -> ~18km "detection" range

Adjusting Textures/Canopy tab.

Values doubled (at least) compared to recommended values.

Combined with settings ***.

SAME DETECTION RANGE - 18km!

Objects (tanks) just popup at distance of 18km.

Restoring default Structable.sht file and Fog parameters in graphics.cfg...

Result - 28km "detection" range!

Only graphics.cfg restored.

Result - 28km.

Only Structable.sht restored.

Result - back to 18km!

So it's fog parameters' fault.

Data for the next phase of the test.

Default:

FogParam1 = 12;

FogParam2 = 1.1;

ObjectFogMultiplier = 0.6;

Cause of the problem (from the Lock On fog effect thread):

FogParam1 = 13.3;

FogParam2 = 1.1;

ObjectFogMultiplier = 0.8;

Recommended by aimmaverick+:

FogParam1 = ??.?;

FogParam2 = 0.0;

ObjectFogMultiplier = 0.2;

Recommended by Kuky:

FogParam1 = 12;

FogParam2 = 1;

ObjectFogMultiplier = 0.2;

Recommended by 159th_Viper:

FogParam2 = 0.2;

ObjectFogMultiplier = 0.4;

ObjectFogMultiplier:

"Higher the number, more transparent ground vehicles become at far. At 1.0 the

transparency will be same as the other ground structure objects. But they might look

like ghosts in the TVM."

Part 2 goals:

1. Find at least one good set of fog parameters. Good for targeting - not for movie

makers.

2. Axamine if there is a connection between detection range of ~30km and the

LOCFG Optimizations - Textures/Canopy - MFD Textures clearness - Static Objects = 30000.

Stay tuned

Have you increased your LandLodDistances[MFD] from Default in your LockOn/Config/graphics.cfg file? Will effect when targets become visible in the IT-23M CRT TV display.

I didn't have to. "Detection" range is higher than enough. My goal was to achieve this with keeping other settings as low as possible to get high FPS. Now I am at a good starting point to lower some settings even further.

Land LOD distance would help me only if it cause roads showing earlier and crispier on the TV display. Does it affect this?

EDIT:

Now i know that MFD section in LOCFG - Optimizations - Textures/Canopy is the same as LandLodDistances section in graphics.cfg. Author shouldn't change the tab name IMHO.

Ok, I've tested it. Answer for the Part 2 second goal is:

2. NO! * LOCFG - Optimizations - Textures/Canopy - MFD Textures clearness - Static Objects determines how soon you will see the roads on Shkval display and has no major influence on detection range of tanks etc.

LOCFG - Optimizations - Textures/Canopy = graphics.cfg LandLodDistances section
