are you supposed to get a lock or launch warning from the HQ-7 if it's just the launcher component with no search radar component? Because at the moment we get neither

Launcher only uses optic for track and lock. So no warning.

Shouldn’t it belike the Tunguska then? It seems REALLY accurate for only being guided by optics, although I might just not understand its guidance

It's a SACLOS missile like the Tunguska, though AFAIK the Tunguska merely uses a TV sensor while the Crotale (and HQ-7 since it's based on it) uses an IR sensor to maintain track.

Long time ago, there was a Tor-M1 operation manual on internet.

I read it, it seems that optics guidance is reliable enough.

Tor-M1 use optics system for backup or engage low-flying birds.

So, i guess you would use flares to defeat it?

Optical systems are no less accurate than radar guided ones, provided they can see the target. The main issue is usually that the missile flies a much less efficient path as the range of the target is not generally known (so the missile ends up in a big curve rather than flying to an intercept point).

As far as using flares on the HQ-7, it'd really depend on the 'IR' nature of the guidance. If it is a thermal camera (most likely), then flares probably won't fool it as its looking for a hot outline of a jet, not just the exhaust.

That said, DCS might abstract it, so it may work. Otherwise, forcing the missile to change direction alot by manoeuvring will wear down its range and energy very quickly.

No because it's not IR guided like a Sidewinder, it's an Infrared camera acquiring a contrast lock on the jet. A flare wouldn't be any more useful against this than it would be against a Tunguska.

how do you defeat it then other than just maneuvering?
