Lockon!

I had a spare (band new) business portable, a very modest Dell Vostro 1000 with AMD Turion 64 processor, 2 Gb RAM, a slow disk and a default ATI Radeon Express 1150 video card (X300 based, Aero Glas compatible), running Vista Business 32bit.

I'm installing all my flightsims to see what it gives and what the problems with Vista are. There is a CLEAR winner though: Lockon 1.02

- installed very easily (just run in compatibility mode with adm. rights)

- I can set 16:10 display by editing graphics.cfg

- very good performance

- a joy to fly

- good, lush graphics with nice haze

- man, this game is young as ever!

UPDATE: I also installed Lockon Gold 1.12b

- see sticky: http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=24679

- no problem at all. I did download an updated starforce driver from the starforce site,

and installed it also

Second comes IL-2 1946

- very easy install (a.exe instead of setup)

- good performance

- fantastic game

- BUT I cannot select a widescreen mode

Very nice surprise: CF3

- problem-free install

- runs better than ever

- graphics still horrible of course, but I can run them on highest with no

problem

Minor problem: F4:AF

- install no problem

- works fine, good performance

- F-16 model becomes *transparent* in external view!

Small disappointment: WOE/WOV

- latest shader technology incompatible, some install problems

- had to edit files (terrain data ini) to get game with latest patch working (disable use of

effectshaders)

- had to install DX9.0C SDK files

- acceptable performance, graphics not optimal, joystick oversensitive

- still a classic, it runs MUCH better on my other systems though

Total disaster: FSX!

- install problematic, extremely slow

- graphics problem, resets desktop interface

- completely unplayable, even with SP1

- DX10 support must be a sick joke, it works better on a XP SP2 computer

with less specs.

- uninstall took about one hour

- I have FSX perfectly working on a comparable XP SP2 system

Not yet tested: F/A-18 ODS, FS9, BOB II

Will NOT test: Lockon FC 1.12b, I guess it will work even better then 1.02, specially in performance and stabilty; maybe some Starforce issues to expect, but according to forums easily solved. I dont want to waste an activation on this.

I have to say that Lock on is very old game, FSX is new game so requirements of FSX are much bigger than lock on, that is normal, so what did you expect after running new game on so old PC in Vista? I understand on your XP FSX runs normal, but Vista is big difference of XP. On XP FSX can run normal but on Vista it requires more hardware :)

IMO your opinion about FSX isn' fair to the end.

-- "install problematic, extremely slow" - FSX has about 12-15 GB so it can be slow (lock on FC 700 mb from CD installs about 15 -20 minutes, so it is also extremally long)

- "DX10 support must be a sick joke, it works better on a XP SP2 computer" - your basic ATI card on testing PC uses Dx10? Wow :) Iam impressed.

- "- uninstall took about one hour" - it is long but it has 12-15GB but it could be more shorter

Vista is big "firewall" of smooth playing...

Hmmm in my tests on Vista (LO:FC) it runs much slower than on XP. CS:S runs extremely sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow :|

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

Well, my surprise was, that since I have FSX up and running on a *comparable* system but with XP SP2, I thought it would run *better* on Vista since FSX was designed for Vista. But indeed, as you say, you need a much more powerful PC (and graphics card) to play FSX on Vista.

Ok, your ATI card doen´t suport DX10, and FSX is not DX10 yet (according to Microsoft it will be patched one day to suport DX10), and Vista Eats UP a lot o memory 10 times more from XP and it may cause games to run Slower, but thats not the only problem as even 4gb systems runs slower than XP.

In Any case, unless you have a top model PC i sugest Sticking to XP.
