MBot Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 It would be nice if the Kh-22N anti-ship missile currently in game could be copy-pasted into the Kh-22NA INS+TERCOM guided land-attack variant. This could probably be set up fairly quickly (no new 3D modeling required) and would provide the Tu-22M3 a stand-off strike capability against land targets in addition to sea targets, providing additional options for interesting mission building. 3
Northstar98 Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 (edited) +1 Though doesn't the NA use a nuclear warhead? The other Kh-22 variant I'd like to see is the Kh-22P/MP ARM variant, though we're lacking a lot of potential RADARs. MBot Posted January 3, 2020 Author Posted January 3, 2020 From what I could gather, the land attack version can be conventional or nuclear just like the anti-ship version. Regimental sized missile strikes with all nuclear weapons only would be a huge waste of nuclear warheads. I think the Kh-22P anti-radar version was only operational with the Tu--22P Blinder and the Kh-22MP for the Backfire was apparently cancelled. 1
MBot Posted January 3, 2020 Author Posted January 3, 2020 Just saw today's newsletter. Kh-22NA would be the weapon of choice for Backfire or Bear-G to strike Andersen AFB on Guam :) 1
Northstar98 Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 Ahh never mind then And yes provided conventional (I don't have any personal beef with nuclear weapons in DCS but I understand the problems they cause). And yes you'd be able to replicate the attack on NASKEF in Red Storm Rising just on Guam instead of Iceland. 1 Modules I own: F-14A/B, F-4E, Mi-24P, AJS 37, AV-8B N/A, F-5E-3, MiG-21bis, F-16CM, F/A-18C, Supercarrier, Mi-8MTV2, UH-1H, Mirage 2000C, FC3, MiG-15bis, Ka-50, A-10C (+ A-10C II), P-47D, P-51D, C-101, Yak-52, WWII Assets, CA, NS430, Hawk. Northstar98 Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 (edited) Was going to start a new thread but then I saw that this had already been requested (and I completely forgot about it). With the Marianas map now being only a few months away from planned release, it would be fantastic to see the Kh-22NA implemented for the Tu-22M-3 we have currently. As MBot said above, the Kh-22NA [AS-4 Kingfish B Mod 3] is a land attack variant of our existing Kh-22N [AS-4 Kingfish A Mod 3] anti-ship missile. However, instead of the N's INS+ARH guidance system for maritime strike, the Kh-22NA features INS+TERCOM (terrain contour matching) guidance for attacking land targets. Externally they are identical, apart from the radome, which now doesn't house a RADAR and is painted the same colour as the rest of the missile (looks like it has a green patch on the underside of the nose - presumably for the RADAR altimeter). Their flight model however is identical (not sure about the profile, though I would've thought TERCOM would necessitate flying lower - this is just speculation though). For warheads I was mistaken, and MBot was correct; both the Kh-22N and NA come in both conventional (960kg 9A-22 hollow-charge explosive that is directed 45° downwards from the missile, using 630 kg of TGAG-5 explosive) and a nuclear variant (at least 350kT). Though obviously, nuclear weapons are kinda unsuitable for DCS and as such we should stick to the conventional variants. It would be great to be able to use this system for strikes on Guam; similar to the Tu-22M strike on NASKEF in Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising (in that book they used air-bursting fuses, though not sure if the real missile has one - the nuclear armed ones use airbursting fuses from what I can find, but not sure on the conventional ones). As for passive homing MBot was correct; the Kh-22P/MP/NP [AS-4 Kitchen C Mod 1/2/3 respectively] ARM variants were only on the Tu-22KP/KPD - which is a dedicated EW variant of the Tu-22. The Kh-22NP [AS-4 Kitchen C Mod 3] intended for the Tu-22M-2/M-3 wasn't adopted. As for the others the Kh-22M only saw limited service and only on the Tu-22KP/KPD and apparently the Kh-22P (also only on the Tu-22KP/KPD) was flawed - presumably it wasn't very accurate. It should be said however that the anti-ship variants, which are the Kh-22PG/M/N [AS-4 Kitchen A Mod 1/2/3 respectively] does have a passive mode for its RADAR seeker, but this is a HOJ mode (presumably this will be effective against OECM systems i.e barrage/noise jammers - not sure how well it would do against more sophisticated DECM systems - it should be said however that the EW environment in DCS is sorely lacking and no ships in DCS have any ECM or countermeasure systems at all (the Hornet is something a little different but not sure what it's actually doing under the hood)). Spoiler You might've noticed I've given different modifications - I'm unsure what each refers to, but just so we're on the same page (and this is AFAIK - this mostly comes from the stellar C:MANO database) mod 1 missiles were carried by the Tu-22K/KD/KP/KPD only, the mod 2 on the Tu-22K/KD/KP/KPD and M2 and the Mod. 3 on both the Tu-22M-2 and M-3. We only have the Tu-22M3 so only the Kh-22N/NA [AS-4 Kitchen A/B Mod 3] are appropriate. MBot Posted May 6, 2024 Author Posted May 6, 2024 In light of the new Kola map, could a land-attack variant of the Kh-22 missile be reconsidered? Would be very useful for Backfires to strike Bodo. Use of conventional land attack Kh-22 missiles (even with its lack of precision) have been sadly demonstrated in current world events. 3
