It seems that the graphical representation (box) of a steerpoint on the HUD does not care what the ELEV parameter in STPT page is set to. The steerpoint is always more or less roughly at ground level.

Is this a bug? If not, what is the purpose of setting the ELEV parameter for a steerpoint?

Steerpoint elevation

I just noticed this as well. It also seems to be tied to the altitude bug for the HUD. Wx is set to pressure of 30.31. HUD says -200 ft on start up with 29.92 set on altimeter. Select correct pressure on altimeter, altimeter goes to correct indication but HUD stays the same. Now I can't get my steerpoints to display because they are all underground because I set them in mission editor to ground level.

Notice when steerpoints are invalid because the steerpoint diamond remains on HUD and doesn't move. Just stays fixed on center of HUD.

I guess using standard pressure or lower will have to suffice. Damn bugs.

A HAF pilot told me that their F-16 always display the steerpoint diamond at ground level no matter its elevation, in AG mode, so that's not necessarily a bug. I have no info on how it works on a USAF/ANG jet though, so it could definitely be different. In general, using HAF info for a USAF jet is not a good idea, to say the least.

The other issue with the underground and invisible steerpoints sure sounds like it is though.

The steerpoint is placed visually wherever the point in space described by the coordinates/elevation. Generally that's where the ground should be but it's not required. If you know the Mirage 2000, F-16 works like that.

Yes, on-the-fly updates to the elev value should move the steerpoint around vertically which it currently doesn't in DCS.

If the F-16 always displays the steerpoint at ground level, no matter its elevation, the I have two questions:

- Does the real F-16 have a worldwide elevation database / map to know the elevation of every possible point in the world, even though it has no moving map?

- What is the point of entering elevation? If I enter 20,000 feet elevation for steerpoint 4 and this has no effect whatsoever, why is that parameter present in the DED?

This sounds reasonable, as this is also the way the Hornet and JF-17 work. The elevation you enter for a steerpoint results in the steerpoint being shown at that elevation, in 3D space, on the HUD.

I think the GCAS enabled airplanes might but in general the F-16 does not. Regardless if it has it or not, in any F-16 if you put a steerpoint at 30,000' over Kansas then the steerpoint diamond shows up at 30,000' in mid air. You absolutely can make floating steerpoints if you want physically in the system.

Operationally that's not what's done. The steerpoints are supplied to the jet by human planners at the predicted ground surface for two reasons: because that's generally where the AG target is and the airplane does make use of the difference between heights by different sensors to calibrate its understanding of altitude. You fly over a steerpoint ELEV 2,164' at radar altimeter height measuring 562' the system figures that airplane own true altitude is 2726' when previously it might think it was at 2667'. It blends in this update of vertical position. I'm pretty sure that if the steerpoint is way different than the surface the system knows to reject blending in huge vertical calibrations which would throw the ownship INS altitude way out of whack.

In the real airplane if you change the ELEV field the point will move to the new elevation. Remember in a moderately recent version of DCS it was impossible to change the latitude/longitude of the points at all. The ability to change the elevation simply hasn't been added yet.

Not the world, but some specific models will have the flight area elevation data, but the data will not have man made or flora obstacles.

AFAIK, you can not change elevation of way points or even initial point in the Open Beta 2.5.5.41962 DCS F-16, this is a bug but not sure if it has been reported, I have not looked.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.
