station2station Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 (edited) I was given (back) a NIB Ryzen 3600 and 16GB RAM @3200mhz. I have 2 gaming rigs and have no idea what to do with them now. For a number of reasons I do not want to sell them. What I was going to do, devoid of having these components, was build a dedicated server, BUT to host DCS AND an instance of Space Engineers. I have never built a server of any kind, but now I am just genuinely curious and want to do it for fun... but what kind... The Ryzen 3600 is a bit much for a server and requires a GPU (not ideal) The Ram is non-ecc so that is risky as well. I could maybe use a NAS, but that is a waste given the Ryzen. I have 2 older computer with E8400 and Q6600, but those aren't very fast for modern games. I don't care to have a media server. FireTV and Chromecast works fine. Any thoughts on running 2 gaming instances with these components? Rudel_chw Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 ... The Ryzen 3600 is a bit much for a server and requires a GPU (not ideal) The Server edition of DCS does not require a GPU, mine works fine with the on-board graphics of the motherboard. For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600 - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia RTX2080 - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB
station2station Posted February 10, 2020 Author Posted February 10, 2020 The Server edition of DCS does not require a GPU, mine works fine with the on-board graphics of the motherboard. The Ryzen 3600 does not have the Radeon onboard graphics like the 3xxxG models do. It required a graphics card. (granted I have a 15 year old garbage GPU) hence the needing GPU. Rudel_chw Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 Yes, but you can use any cheap, even 2nd hand, graphics card .. on my country I can find 2nd hand pci-ex cards from us$ 20. Well yeah and I have 3 spares, they just aren't good enough to run any modern games. (thats how I will interface with it) In fact, I will likely end up just VPNing into it after it is built. Just trying to decide if I should actually make this a dedicated server to share with you folks or just turn it into a mobile VR machine. Also just got Gb internet, so no bottlenecks there. BitMaster Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 (edited) Basically, a gpu is only needed to install Windows, you could take it out afterwards and run it without once you configured MS Remote Desktop Protocol and have set a pwd for the admin User that you use to login. No OS I know needs a gpu to boot properly, technically. Tho I recommend a cheap gpu for easy access until you get familiar with RDP and remote working In general. ECC is not needed for a game server at all. ECC is also slower and thus contra productive for any game. You won’t need a full blown server OS, a win10 Pro is all you need. Win10 „home“ does not have RDP and has limited tcp connections allowed, use Pro is my tip. Gigabit ISP IS NICE, it the actual limit is your UPLOAD and not your download speed. The more upload speed the better.... and a flawless jitter free Connection overall. Install 10 Pro Enable RDP Install DCS Server Open/configure your Router Enjoy There are guides in here for each step, or just ask us ;) Edited February 14, 2020 by BitMaster Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
