(...and I guess about imaging IR too)

So, how does it work exactly? All they get is a picture, how does it lock on to targets/distuinguish targets from environment? By difference in contrast/brightness? Also, how does it track a moving target target? How does rain, snow, or heavy rain/snow affect its performance? How useful is it in low light level situations?

As for the Ka-50, is it only the basic Shkval, or can the heli be fitted with LLLTV or IR pods?

it basically splits the image in sections and gives each section a value, according to contrast. Modern systems actually recognise targets by comparing them to 3d models in a database (which is cool).

Yep, what FF said. Contrast is the primary target indicator, and tracking simply means centering that little dot of contrast and keeping it centered - if it starts to drift, you turn the rocket to make the drift zero again (proportional navigation).

Rain, snow, etc, affects the performance exactly liek you would expect: If the weapon is using a light frequency that is obscured by the rain, snow, etc, then range is reduced or the weapon becomes downright useless.

In low light, it depends on your device - it's either capable of low/no light operation (because it is a low-light or IR device) or it isn't.

The Ka-50 cannot be fitted with external targetting pods. Upgrades focus mainly on replacing the Shkval with built in FLIR etc, IIRC.

Is this modeled in Black Shark?? Are the camouflages effective?? For example, we couldn't lock onto a green tank over a green grass, could we?

No, I don't think it is modeled - it would be a pretty tough feat right now I think. Perhaps it's something to think about in the new engine - otherwise you get silly things happening like what you see does not correspond with how the weapon acts.
