Dear All,

I read several posts about some users experiencing INOP RDR Cursor on their TM Hotas Cougar when flying DCS's F-16.

I have the same problem, and I can't use the Hotas Throttle RDR Cursor button to move the cursor on the radar and select my targets. When opening DCS settings and trying to assign axis to this function, only the PUSH (ENABLE) function of the mini yoke appears to work (it is called button19), but not the X or Y axis.

Honestly, I'm just a real pilot and not a programmer at all and still try to understand the subtle art of programming the Hotas through the CCP or Foxy or Target softwares.

So, I really ask for your help and patience in trying to figure out how to have my problem solved. Please, consider me as an absolute beginner.

I would really appreciate a step by step help or explanations.

Thanks a lot. :worthy:

Best regards.

You need to set the Axis on the Cougar Control Panel in such a way that the Microstick axes are amongst the first 8 columns, as columns 9 and 10 cant be seen by DCS.

Thanks Rudel for your quick reply.

When I opened the CCP, columns 9 and 10 were already assigned to both toe brakes. Microstick X and Y were already in column 7 and 8.

Button & Axis emulation were on OFF (red).

I then copied the configuration shown on your own 10-14-2019 and applied. When I clicked on APPLY it didn't ask me for a device restart.

I then started DCS and found NO CHANGES. The microstick is still not working.

Surprisingly, the ANT ELEVATION rotary dial does act as Microstick X.

When I open DCS Options, than AXIS COMMAND, I find:

ANT Elev KnoB ==> JOY_SLIDER2 (actually, which command is this on on the TM Hotas Cougar)?

RDR CURSOR Switch - X axis ===> JOY_RX (which responds to ANT ELEV movements).

RDR CURSOR Switch - X axis ===> JOY_RY (what is it?)

RUDDER ==> JOY_RZ (what is it?)

I get mad.....

Any hint?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Have a nice evening.

On my DCS options, the Axes are these:

(The Throttle isnt shown, as I didnt notice that it was at the end of the list)

On the CCP I have the axes like this:

You dont need my Foxy Profiles for this, as the Axes are handled directly by DCS, the Foxy profile handles just the Hats & Buttons.

Hope you can solve the problem.

Hi Rudel,

thanks.

I did exactly what you suggested me to do, and nothing changed.

Then,, when I start DCS and open the controls seting page, i find myself again with:

ANT Elev KNOB ====> assigned to JOY_SLIDER2. Whatever control I touch, nothing happens at this level.

I assume that JOY_SLIDER2 is not active.

MAIN RNG KNOB ===> assigned to JOY_SLIDER1. When I turn the MAIN RNG knob on the Cougar, I see a white bar increasing and decreasing under JOY_SLIDER1.

RDR CURSOR Switch - X axis ===> assigned to JOY_RX. When I turn the ANT Elev Knob on the Cougar, I see a white bar increasing and decreasing under JOY_RX. This reflects what finally happens in the simulator. Moving the ANT Elev knob does move the RDR cursor right and left.

So, I understand that the ANT Elev Knob is seen as JOY_RX. But Why?

RDR CURSOR Switch - Y axis ===> assigned to JOY_RX. Whatever control I touch, nothing happens at this level.

I assume that JOY_RX is not "active".

I've tried to contact EAGLE to have some help, but they said that they I should post my problem on the forum.

Sorry to be a hassle, but I can't solve my problem.

Something should be missing in my comprehension of the system, but I'm stuck.

Any further help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Your choice of words confuses me a bit .. just to clarify, when you say "ANT assigned to" you mean that you can't bind the axis yourself, or you expect DCS to assign an axis on its own?

On the Cougar CCP, if you click on the Viewer button ... do all the axes work there?

Sorry for using the wrong words.

As I told you, I'm new to all this.

In DCS's control setting page, under AXIS, the action "ANT Elev KNOB" shows "JOY_SLIDER2" under Thustmaster HITAS Cougar column, by default.

If I double click to bind this action to a different axis, a "ADD ASSIGNMENT PANEL" windows pops up.When I move the KNOB back and forth, a JOY_RX shows up in the Key/Button field. If I push the OK, green button I find the JOY_RX and the JOY_SLIDER2 in the same cell under the Thustmaster HOTAS Cougar column.

The weird things I found in DCS Control Settings:

a) The "ANT ELEV Knob" action is bound to JOY_SLIDER2 by default. But no command seems to work on this axis.

b) When I move the actual ANT ELEV Knob on the throttle, a white bar moves under JOY_RX.

c) By default, "RDR Cursor Axis - X" is bound to no axis, while RDR Cursor Axis Y is bound to JOY_RY axis.

d) If I try to bind "RDR Cursor Axis - X" to an axis, I'm only given 5 options and JOY_SLIDER2 is not shown.

And to reply to your last question, in CCP's VIEWER all the buttons ans axes seem to work BUT the ministick at #19. If I push the ENABLE Button, then it turns red in the image. But if I move the ministick in both axes, nothing happens.....

I hope my explanations are a bit clearer now.

Thanks!

I really don't know what may be wrong with your Cougar, but I'm pretty sure that if all axes dont work on the Viewer, then it isnt DCS fault that it cant recognize those axes.

Here is how my TM Viewer reacts when operating all the axes that I have (7, as I don't have the TM Rudder pedals):

2a38Z5vWjZI

My axes are these:

Z = Throttle

S1 = Range Knob

XR = Antenna Knob

S2 = Microstick Y axis

ZR = Microstick X axis

X & Y = Flight Stick axes.

Maybe you should try the Manual calibration of the TM CCP, just in case the stored calibration (that is inside the Cougar's EPROM) is at fault. Here is a video on how to run the calibration:

tCXV0O4ZEGg

Hope you can find the problem.

Best regards,

Eduardo

If you don't clear wrong assignment first it just adds the new assignment and can conflict with it.

Click on the Joy_slider2 and then the Clear Assignment button to remove that assignment from "ANT Elev KNOB".

Then double click the assignment box and assign the axis you want by moving the knob like you were.

I am following this thread as I am kinda dealing with the same issue. I have been able to get one access working on the microstick but not the other. My HOTAS CCP axes are set up the same way as Rudel. One thing I did notice is Rudels Button and Axis Emulation is On in the HOTAS CCP. Mine will not allow me to turn it on in the control panel, but I can in the CCP viewer. I do not know if this has anything to do with it working or not working in the game. I was trying to have everything emulate what he has on the CCP. I will go back and see if I can set up game controls to how Rudel has his game.

Posted

Just an update. I followed what Rudel did and I had success. My microstick works as advertised. I had to invert the Y axis because the direction was opposite of the microstick, but very happy. When I was assigning the microstick, I was getting the same key for both x and y axis. It took me a few minutes to figure out that if you dont hit the sweet spot on the microstick, you will activate both x and y axis. So I moved the X axis to assign the key and for the y axis, I used the key/button drop down menu and picked the key. I went to the F16 to test and it all works. I even assigned the manual range knob but I don't think this is presently active in the game. So here are my assignments. My ANT ELEV knob is different then Rudels, but every other assignment is the same. But make sure your HOTAS CCP is set up the same as Rudels example, so Windows and DCS sees the microstick.

ANT ELEV Knob: JOY_RX

MAN RNG Knob: JOY_SLIDER1

RDR CURSOR Switch - X axis: JOY_RZ

RDR CURSOR Switch - Y axis: JOY_SLIDER2

Hope this helps anyone trying to get their Cougar microstick working.

Hi Eduardo,

Thanks for your reply.

As I can see from the video taken of your CCP's VIEWER, when you move the microstick you can see movement in the rudder section, at Z2 and SR axis.

When I do the same with my own CCP's VIEWER, I don't see any movement.

Moreover, when I do manual calibration as you suggested, at step 14 and 15 (those that concern the microstick) I don't see ANY Movement in the RAW VALUE field on the bottom left of the window.

What do you suggest? A faulty microstick?

Is there any way I can perform a status of all the physical controls of my Throttle?

Thanks for your help.

Best regards,

Hello,

Well, it could be a faulty microstick, but I find it curious that both microstick axes are faulty at the same time .. my own microstick failed a couple of years ago, but it was a single axis problem, and it still kind of worked (had a reduced range of values), I replaced it as told on this thread:

The microstick is basically two potentiometers on a single board, so any electronic technician would be able to test it if you remove it from the throttle (it isn’t too hard, as the microstick board has a plug to disconnect it from the casing)

The real problem is that there are no more spares of this part .. you could try to remove the part and apply a bit of contact cleaning spray onto the metallic part of the microstick, it may be worth a try. Here is a photo of the part (the one at the right, the left one is the throttle pot)

I've got a couple questions...1-can the cougar throttle be used with the warthog stick? 2-does anyone know if TM will be offering any solutions or hardware for us that have the old cougars stick and throttle and would like to upgrade and fix for the DCS viper

No, unless you add a TUSBA adapter, as the throttle doesn't have a USB connector.

There is no announcement on that respect by TM. I wonder why they don’t just reinstate the Cougar into production, it only needs a driver updated for Win10, as it is already compatible with the TARGET software.

I am using my Cougar throttle with my Warthog stick. I have the throttle connected to the Cougar stick for the USB connection. But what I did is remove the stick from the base and put the base in the corner out of the way. DCS will map the functions to both sticks but you can very easily delete the functions to the Cougar stick. The reason I am not using the Cougar stick is because the springs for the x and y axis are shot and its very sloppy. The Warthog stick works a lot better. When I want to fly the Hornet or Hawg, all I have to do is swap out the throttle. I did buy the TUSBA adapter, but none of the buttons would work, something with my setup. I'll address that one day.

Did you disconnect the controller from the computer and then reconnect it. I had an issue where CCP would not see the Cougar and would not function. Or parts would be visible and not the microstick. So unplug it and then plug it back in to see if it recognizes everything.

Yes, that works too .. I assumed that the question was about using just the Throttle :)

Hi Eduardo,

Hi everybody,

I eventually found where the problem was.

On TM CCP I did change the axis assignement as suggested by Rudel, but didn't select the "Apply enable/desable Windows axes state".

Once I did it, CCP asked me to restart the device, restarted it and I eventually found my microstick perfectly operational.

Sorry for the hassle and thanks to you all for having been helping me.

Have nice flights.

Hello all,

I’ve experienced a similar issue, but have followed the instructions here and had some luck. The issue I have now is that I need “Emulation ON” in CCP for the RDR Cursor to work. When I do this, I lose a number of HOTAS commands in-game, namely the DOG FIGHT switch and the DMS ability to change MFD SOI. I can’t get the RDR Cursor To show its axis in DCS settings at all.

I’m hoping this is a simple oversight on my part. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Hi Rudel,

I recently acquired a TM cougar HOTAS and I'm also having an issue with the slew stick. It's not even recognised on the Microsoft calibration software. Is there a mod or summit for it please? Everything else is tickity boo a d I cant moan for £20.

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers.
