I just received the F18, setup control bindings, took the taxi/takeoff, and managed to get off the runway but have a couple of questions.

1. The instructor said that afterburners have to be engaged for takeoff but did not tell exactly when to engage them - at first start down the runway or reaching a given speed.

2. There is a setting for the F18 that gives the choice of always off or always on. When always off is selected does that mean that I can not selectively engage afterburners or is engagement by setting the binding for that or does the above mentioned of on mean that I can set a binding switch to engage. here is a binding for cycling afterburners when needed.

3. What is the takeoff and landing speed spec for the F18.

4. What is the maximum speed of the F18.

I can't find answers to these questions in the manual.

1) You usually go for 80 - 100% with brakes, then release brakes and after two - three seconds, you bring the afterburner.

2) That option is there for you too be able to always go full afterburner without pressing the detent or not.

You can for example put that to never and bind the detend keys, so you can still stop yourself going full AB everytime.

3) Depends on weight.

For landing though, you usually go for AoA speed, meaning you keep the speed at which the AoA indicator shows the middle symbol.

4) Ultimate top speed is around M1.8 or so at higher altitudes and less low on the deck

Afterburner

Is there an indicator for the afterburner. I pressed the assigned binding and I did not notice any discernible effect. Throttle was maxed, I got off at about 130, climbed, and got up to about 150, climbed slowly to 20,000 leveled off at 300 or so.

Is this the expected performance or have I done something wrong?
