I know I'm being thick, but why do I need to dial in the runway course for ILS?

Shouldn't ILS only line up on the correct runway course?

I understand for TACAN the course dial will give you an early aid to runway lineup, but ILS should bring only you to the correct lineup.

sorry for being thick

Not flow it for a while, but I'm guessing it's so the HSI is aligned with the runway, to prevent confusion.

ok that would make sense...

but the needles only line up and guide when the correct course is set on the HSI.

my point is that the ILS needles should line up no matter what course is set on the HSI.

it's no big deal to dial up the course for the runway selected, it's just that I like to understand the correct fundamental principles.

thanks anyway.

If you have your course pointer set for the heading of the desired runway, when you're on course with a centered needle, that will help you line up on the runway center-line before you're able to actually see it. Also, if your course needle is more than 90 degrees off to one side or the other, your glideslope needle won't show.
