shaHeen-1 Posted April 25, 2020 Posted April 25, 2020 (edited) Is it supposed to fire immediately after the first? I would expect it to wait a bit depending on range to target to fire again to conserve efficiency. For example, for a long range throw, I would rather like it to stay near Mach 2 for much longer than just spike to Mach 4 at the start and lose much of its energy to high speed drag. Maybe I'm wrong. AeriaGloria Posted April 25, 2020 Posted April 25, 2020 According to Deka later variants are dual pulse, the SD-10A is dual stage but not dual pulse Black Shark Den Squadron Member: We are open to new recruits, click here to check us out or apply to join! https://blacksharkden.com
AeriaGloria Posted April 25, 2020 Posted April 25, 2020 Dual stage= there are two stages, in this case a boost followed by sustain stage Dual impulse = can choose to fire each stage separately, this is likely how the AIM-120D gets its range, by firing second stage very late for slowest average speed and drag Black Shark Den Squadron Member: We are open to new recruits, click here to check us out or apply to join! https://blacksharkden.com
shaHeen-1 Posted April 25, 2020 Author Posted April 25, 2020 Ah so for the first one the two are glued together and can't be separated?
Harker Posted April 25, 2020 Posted April 25, 2020 Ah so for the first one the two are glued together and can't be separated?I don't know about the SD-10A specifically, but just dual boost is what AeriaGloria is saying. foxwxl Posted April 25, 2020 Posted April 25, 2020 Dual thrust is a boost-sustain motor, it do not need a second ignition which is difficult for the solid rocket. Dual thrust use different fuel burning speed or burning surface for boost-sustain thrust. Dual impulse motor need a second ignition and usually ignite the second stage near terminal phase, thus increase the average speed and terminal energy for the missile to intercept high maneuver targets like fighter.
