JDAM AUTO Time To Impact countdown in HUD is enormously inaccurate

Waypoint designate a target, climbed to 26,000 feet, used GBU-31, TOO mode, set AUTO, LOFT 30. Weapon release worked great, bomb hit target... but HUD indication reported 43 seconds to imapct.... bomb was still gliding for another good 20 seconds before impact.
