Rickling Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 Hi. I am still a noob even after a year of playing DCS I guess but can anyone tell me why no matter what I do this program is constantly hitting speed bumps and hangs in addition to the long load times? The framerate runs fine and I have no qualms with that. Its the loadtimes and especially the stalling. Nothing is more infuriating than when Im about to touchdown on the carrier and thats when the game chooses to freeze for 3 seconds. Or at other crucial moments like in the middle of a dogfight. It seems to have something to do with a sound effect being loaded or a smoke effect but I cant be sure. I have an SSD with 10GB of ram. Ive tried so many things, and pretty much every friggin current gen game I run on this pc runs fine except DCS and star citizen. I understand the latter being kind of a shitshow, but DCS? Nobody else seems as frustrated as I am. Jesus Christ even when I try to quit the program it takes like 5 minutes. Im just really frustrated. Any insights? Suggestions?
Bobik2002 Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 I think ram is bottleneck. Ryzen 9 5900x | 32GB DDR4 | RTX 3090 | 32GB RAM
Bobik2002 Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 Can you clarify? You think I need more ram?Yeah I think so, I have 32gigs and dcs sometimes eats 25gb. What's your ram usage while you playing? Ryzen 9 5900x | 32GB DDR4 | RTX 3090 | 32GB RAM
Rickling Posted May 22, 2020 Author Posted May 22, 2020 I think a little over 8. Perhaps I'll buy extra ram soon. Anything I can do to tweak it? Ive been trying to figure out which of the hundreds of extraneous windows background processces I can stop but its hard to figure out which ones are which.
Rickling Posted May 22, 2020 Author Posted May 22, 2020 My D:\ drive is the SSD, which is where I have DCS, but the User folder is still in C:\. Do you think that creates problems? Also for some reason there are two different user folders that were created, Im not sure which one is being used.
Lange_666 Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 (edited) To find out, change something in the settings or in the controls of a airplane and check the file date after the change (not the folder date). Gives you the correct user. There are probably other ways but the above was the first thing that popped. Also, could you give an insight one what hardware you run? Thinder Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 Can you clarify? You think I need more ram? It will greatly depend on your operating system but on Windows 10, memory management is abysmal, you got so much stuff running in the background without you knowing it eats memory for breakfast. Start by turning OFF everything you do not use. Minimum would be 16GB, it's what I have now and I expect to hit some issues sooner than later, so even before installing the game, I prepared my system with a large (271 GB) partition for paging file for the system itself. Then a 240GB SDD fully dedicated to the game itself, I have plenty of space available for Windows to run on C partition alone, but if you start sharing partitions it complicates data transfer. So I'm still planning in an upgrade to 32 GB, but it will come last, since I also upgrade my Graphic card, just waiting for the items to be delivered, then I'll install, fine tune and see. I'll keep you posted. Win 11Pro. Corsair RM1000X PSU. Rickling Posted May 23, 2020 Author Posted May 23, 2020 I have an Intel Core i5-2300 with a base CPU speed of 2.8 GHz and 10GB of ram, windows 10 x64 based processor. I am running DCS Open beta on a CT500MX 500GB SSD. I am also using a paging file that currently has a total size of 127000 MB (75000 MB on the SSD and 52000 on the C:\ drive). I'm a little unclear on how exactly paging files work so if anyone has any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong with the paging file (or anything else) It would be much appreciated. As soon as I have some extra cash I'm going to buy more RAM but until then I wish I could figure out how to get rid of these stalls. I try to avoid playing missions with too many units and I always change the weather so that there are no clouds (besides they look kinda bad). What else? Sometimes I prefer Falcon because on top of the almost complete mapping of almost every system in the f-16 and the dynamic campaign, it performs much better due to the obviously lighter workload it puts on my system. But I always come back to DCS because it looks so much better, and I want to fly other aircraft.
Lange_666 Posted May 24, 2020 Posted May 24, 2020 I have an Intel Core i5-2300 with a base CPU speed of 2.8 GHz and 10GB of ram. Sorry to say but that will barely cut it for DCS these days. Adding more ram will not do it either. Your entire system needs an upgrade. Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. Rickling Posted May 25, 2020 Author Posted May 25, 2020 Ive been running it ok for the past year , if the mission isnt too packed with units it runs fine, its just that it stalls if it gets too busy
