Badger633 Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 I ask this question as had some peculiar actions off my wingman on landing Case 1. I have set a F18 mission two ship with a case one landing at the end. Throughout the mission I have designated the wingman as echelon right close (527x304). All good during the mission However when heading back using TACAN once I gave the initial call to the carrier the wingman seemed to suddenly go to line abreast group close. (This formation never works well as he is constantly changing position i.e. in front behind or above moving all over the place. I assume the AI is sensing the proximity of my aircraft). Once into the 5mile hold he is constantly in this formation right up to kiss off where I think he should have been trailing in the hold with a good separation not trying to out do the Red Arrows (Blue Angels). Once I landed he was down within 10 15 seconds or so. Went into the back of me. That probably was my fault should have got out the way quicker :-( So I would appreciate knowing what the AI wingman should do ? Maybe the answer is it isn't completely sorted yet and that's perfectly fine. fmedges Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 I think it’s a known issue. The problem being that the AI flys a pattern of about 0.8 miles abeam. If you fly the correct pattern you and the AI will be in the grove at the same time. I have a track showing this as I was curious why this was happening. Cpt Cuckoo Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 Disobedient wingmen?....Yeah...Tell me about it. They don't listen to me sometimes either. I order them back to base with me and there is often one who won't rejoin formation because he refuses to break off his attack on bandits. Once, on final approach to the carrier, a wingman jumped right in front of me attempting to land before me. I kept holding approach right behind him anyway until what seems like 150 yards from the deck, when he quickly pulled a left turn and broke off. Fun times with wingmen............. Sounds like pilot porn!
