Yes, here is a direct link with the military aviation back in WWI era, especially for the rifle (officially “carbine”) with that bulky 30-round magazine.

As far I know this rifle was a world's first (semi-)automatic long-barrel weapon on board of airplanes: pistols and revolvers was used before, machine guns — after that.

Not quite. It's not a Cessna 172 at all, so it's not close. Those tiny planes are all similar, so even close doesn't matter much.

 

The guess wasn't close at all. Next tip would be that Zimbabwe operates some, but Namelos hit it before the situation got to that level :D
