How does reprojected 60/120 (index) compare to 45/90

Hello,

i finally familiarized myself with ASW on the oculus rift (still do not own one myself though).

I can happily say, that i'm not super sensible to ASW, so i could probably play on forced 45 (tray tools) without feeling sick or distracted.

I wonder however how the index high refresh rate help the reprojeced experience. 60/120 is a significant step up from oculus 45/90 and i would think that it should noticeably reduce artifacts from reprojection.

Does someone with a index, also have experience with oculus or other "lower" refresh rate HMDs and could compare 60/120 to 40/80 ASW or 45/90 ASW?

Thanks.

I see no one gave you an answer, so here are my 2 cents about your question. I still have CV1 and Index, and the difference is noticeable but not a big deal. Thing is - you should get around 50-60 fps without asw to get a pleasant feeling of index with 120/60 hz setting. Reason to that is when you drop below 45 (with motion smoothing on) you will get far more artifacts - comparable to 30-35 for oculus with asw on. So it is related to your hardware. If you can run constant 50-60 fps then index 60 hz is nicer than oculus 45. I felt it when I did some comparisons. Another thing is that at higher altitudes you can get 90 hz and can not get 120 so it is always a trade off...

I can compare the 40/80, 45/90 and 60/120 rates on the index and it feels noticeably smoother if you can maintain 60fps (compared over 40 or 45fps)

regarding the reprojection or motion smoothing on the index (aka ASW).. I find it personally terrible... from bend lines to really jittery full screen hiccups (caused by motion smoothing).

I leave the smoothing off and live with the hiccups I get when the framerate runs from half-rate all the way to the actual refreshrate (i.e. between 45 and 90), which is less harsh than what motion smoothing does.

Unfortunately I can barely maintain 60fps in DCS and much less on ground or online. Cannot comment on the ASW, I have it off and to stick with the small image offset you get between the left and right eye when looking sideways or when rotating in place.

It is not cool, motion sickness is ... okay... it takes used to, for sure and spinning on ground with the helo still makes me not comfortable since I see lines on the ground doubled.

I have a decent but not top notch rig (8700k, 2080TI, 32G RAM) and an Index and have found 45/90 with moderate graphics settings works best. Consistent 60 FPS on the ground just isn’t achievable for me even with min settings, VR modded shaders, etc.

would that be on public MP, or in a controlled SP/Coop environment?

i would have guessed that 60fps should be archievable on a 2080ti, if you are not doing public MP...

Even on single player, I haven’t found consistent 60 FPS on the ground or at low altitude to be possible.

I don't sweat fps numbers, but I do sweat smoothness - fluidity in flight. My graphics card isn't that strong, it's a 1080 (not ti), and I owned both the Rift S and now own the index. I have found that to have the fluidness I want (I hate micro stutters) I have to run the index at 80mhz. As soon as I kick it up the fps goes up but so do microstutters. I'm waiting to get a 3080.
