Shepski Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Hi Chris! Great article on building your first PC!! The last canned PC of mine was a P100 and building your own is easier then most people think. Seeing that my system is VERY old, and that my Tax refund cheque just showed up... I'm seriously thinking of building another machine. I have no idea on the current state of hardware so I'm looking at the components you used as a guideline. Anything you would change or do differently after getting some time on the machine? I usually build a high end machine that will be upgradable over the next number of years rather than build a new machine every few years. Can anyone else offer some suggestions on the new technology that I should look into? Thanks!
diveplane Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 imo you cant go wrong with a Intel wolfdale cpu or E6850 socket 775.., intel are way ahead and will be for sometime in cpus. over AMD .up to you though https://www.youtube.com/user/diveplane11 DCS Audio Modding.
Shepski Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 Thanks diveplane... I've always used intel and plan on doing so again. I guess I'm wondering which CPU.. the duo or the quad... I'll only need it for running sims or the odd game... I don't do much in the way of multimedia work like Chris does.
BeachAV8R Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Thanks Mark... It was a fun process to build a new machine. The results are...impressive. The only reason I went with quad was for a bit of future-proofing. Some software is forward looking and I'm guessing things like Adobe Premiere and maybe even X-Plane will benefit. General consensus seems to be that dual core is plenty good for now..and I also think that non-SLI video cards are actually a better value for the money. The monster 9800 GX2 is really cool..but the price vs. performance probably isn't all that compelling unless again you are looking for some additional future proofing.. Regards.. BeachAV8R
BeachAV8R Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 By the way, for those interested, my "build" article for the new machine is here: Part I: http://www.simhq.com/_technology2/technology_126a.html Part II: http://www.simhq.com/_technology2/technology_127a.html
Flyby Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 great articles! I actually read them over at SimHq the other day. I like your video too. I keep putting off buying a new system. Too much information to process, and I'm trying to divine what the specs will be for KOTS and SoW-BoB. For instance, will they run better under pci-e2.0? makes my head spin. But all and still, i really like reading about your build exploits. Nicely done! Flyby out The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
