Hi everyone,

I have a "potential" problem understanding the information presented on the SA page.

To summarize, it is a simple mission where I have to destroy a column of some vehicles containing among others as AAA defense a Shilka and an SA13.

The idea is to use both the SA page and the FLIR (in this case the small square of the sensor) to try to locate the convoy.

At the beginning the SA page is free of any threat and at some point when I approach the convoy:

- a circle of threat appears on the SA page

- I then match the location of the FLIR sensor with the threat circle and look around at the FLIR but nothing ...

- In the end I get shot by the SA13 whose location does not coincide at all with the position of the threat circle in SA...

I specify nevertheless that the RWR information are coherent.

Hence my questions:

-Q1: Is there a doc that describes what to expect regarding Ground-Air threats on the SA page ?

-Q2: When does the threat circle appear ?

-Q3: Is there a difference between fixed and mobile Sam ?

-Q4: If mobile Sam is detected, is the position supposed to be updated in real time depending on the movement ?

-Q5: What determines if a Sam threat placed in the mission editor is known at mission start or not?

On the F10 view below taken a few seconds after I got shot you can see:

- the position of the convoy at that moment, convoy arriving from the crossroads in the middle/bottom of the screen before crossing the small town just west from the bottom of the screen.

- a position 9M333 which I think corresponds to the position of the threat circle on my SA page. I understand that it might not correspond exactly with the location of Sa13 whose path is quite far from the marked position but I don't understand why the position seems to be frozen at the moment the threat was detected...

Thanks

Only this brief line in ED's manual

"Air Defense Zones. If a hostile air defense unit is placed in the mission, and not to be hidden, it will appear on the SA display at its geographic location. The system is indicated by two alphanumeric (same as from EW display) with a ring around it that equates to the engagement range (same as indicated in the mission editor and F10 view)."

-Q2: When does the threat circle appear ?

At the start of a mission i.e. IRL it's a pre-briefed threat loaded via a data cartridge.

-Q3: Is there a difference between fixed and mobile Sam ?

The SA page threat ring position may not be accurate if the threat has moved.

-Q4: If mobile Sam is detected, is the position supposed to be updated in real time depending on the movement ?

No

-Q5: What determines if a Sam threat placed in the mission editor is known at mission start or not?

• Is it a radar Sam or AAA unit i.e. it's emissions have potentially been detected before the start of the mission

• Is it visible on the DCS map - unit properties Hidden on Map, on Planner, on MFD are unchecked (perhaps WIP as on Map seems to be the main factor)

On the F10 view below taken a few seconds after I got shot you can see:

In my tests the SA13 isn't associated with a threat ring (likely because it's rightly or wrongly classed as an IR unit), the shilka AAA is radar guided so that was likely the source of your pre-briefed SA threat ring.

As stated the threat ring's position does not update after the start of the mission.

Hi Ramsay,

Brief but better than nothing.

OK thanks

Right

Many thanks Ramsay
