McRuffen Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 I love the Harrier, but the external sounds leave a little to be desired. There's no sound cones or difference between the sound from the front and from the sides/back, so it sounds a little bit like a TIE-fighter howling by as it goes "IIIIIIOOOOOOOO". I've heard real Harriers both flying by and hovering, and the most prominent sound is a thunderous jet sound, not only a puny howl from the fan, especially from behind (from all sides in a hover) and at high thrust. I really hope that a better sound package could be created for the Harrier, as it is a beautiful module. So are there any plans to do this? This is what a real Harrier sounds like:
AesclepiusCrow Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 I'm not sure its an issue with just the Harrier, but I agree, it has too much turbine whine. I've noticed that for most aircraft, there seems to be an overpronounced turbine whine. This is especially prevelant when you're in a 3rd person camera in front of the aircraft looking backwards. Once you move to a rear view, the boom of (other) jets cover the turbine. This has led me to believe that the turbine whine is actually meant to be this loud due to part of the 3D sound engine. Possibly even legacy code from the original A-10 module to get the whining pass they're known for. Problem is, this makes certain jets overly whiny when they approach from certain aspects. The C-101 is also victim to this. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
exhausted Posted November 12, 2020 Posted November 12, 2020 I worked exclusively on Pegasus engines and the sounds are actually pretty good. I heard the motors inside aircraft, outside the aircraft, inside test areas, and outside in the wild. The 'whine' is distinct and more or less ever-present. What I would change is to add a rumble when at high power. The "cones" is a good idea. But the sound samples are actually pretty good.
