Gun Jam Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 Hello Im running an 8086k at 5.1ghz and a 2080ti Im playing my own server with a friend "Through the inferno Syria" Im running TacView The GPU Frame times seem expected. They are mostly consistent and always in re projection territory (like 16ms or something) 80 to 90% utilization CPU frame times are confusing to me and I was hoping someone could explain them a bit more. My CPU frame times are about 18 ish ms but have spikes that are a few ms in duration that push to the top of the graph perhaps 26ms. using task manager none of the cores are above 60% utilization and total cpu usage is low as expected . 1) Does % of utilization = frame time? For example if the highest core was at 10% we might get 4ms at 20% 8ms at 40% 16ms? Is it linear? 2) why am I not seeing spikes in task manager but i am in FPS Vr? 3) Its hard to tell if tac view is causing CPU spikes. Im kind of thinking not at this point. 4) im of the assumption that my CPU frame times should be less considering how low the highest value is (60%) but im not sure how that exactly works any thoughts on this? Thanks
speed-of-heat Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 1) depends, if you have motion smoothing turned off, it’s a pretty close correlation, if not then it may be, I always turn it off for benchmarking. But it’s not clear are you talking about cpu or gpu frame time at this point, remember utilisation of cpu, is also a function of the total number of cores, as dcs will at most use 3 or so cores for cpu, you will likely only see 30% on a 10core device. 2) task manager is a pretty “gross” tool, it doesn’t always show you everything, it could be being caused by the momentary increase in cpu caused by motion smoothing or it could be some other background task, 3) for what it’s worth I don’t have issues caused by tacview. 4) you list your cpu as 8086k I think this is a typo, but, what is your idle cpu utilisation, I would look there first, things that such cpu utilisation there will have an impact in gaming, unused services and lighting software can be a big pain here in my experience SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat
Gun Jam Posted December 7, 2020 Author Posted December 7, 2020 1) was all about CPU. I do use reprojection. 4) Idle the CPU is about 3 to 6%. Im curious why you think the 8086k is a typo. IS there a better tool for observing individual core loads? Thanks
speed-of-heat Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 because an 8086, is a processor from the 1970’s, I think you mean an I7-8086k. there isn’t a better tool that I am aware off, you might try turning of virtualisation/hyper threading in bios, that might help, ymmv. my idle times are between 1 and 2%. I suspect you have a bunch of background processes/service that need turning off. I suggest doing that one at a time, and looking at the ones that make highest use of cpu time, but you will likely need to research each one first, if you just kill them you might have an undesirable effect. Gun Jam Posted December 8, 2020 Author Posted December 8, 2020 Yep. odd name choice I guess they wanted to fly that flag one more time. Ill look for any processes that I could do with out. Thanks for the input!
