I was just wondering about the rectangular shape of the SAM location uncertainty boxes when gathering ELINT with the U22/A.  It seems like a standard mathematical model combining azimuth (and range?) measurement uncertainties from multiple directions should result in an error ellipse rather than a rectangle, and that the ellipse could be oriented with the long axis in any compass direction, not only north/south or east/west like the rectangles.  Anybody have more insight about this?

It might just be an engine limitation of DCS, that it is easier to create a rectangle for this than an ellipse. For a rectangle you just need two X/Y positions to create the entire shape.

I'm more thinking about how the shape is calculated.  The standard mathematical solution to this type of problem, namely using multiple measurements with uncertainty, is an ellipse.  And to represent an ellipse like I'm talking about only takes one more parameter than a rectangle.
