Well, that's what they said on Discovery Channel last night! They said the new AMRAAM has a range of up to 120 miles. Was a pretty good show, actually--showed some Mig-29's, Mig-35's, SU-27's, F-22's, F-35's (JSF) and some new B1B bomber/missile truck.

... yeah, maybe if you drop it from orbit.

To give you a reason why I'd say that: The AIM-54 longest recorded kill is 142nm.

I'd say it would be more realistic to say the new AIM-120 has a max range in the ballpark of 45-50nm.

The AIM-120A had a range of about 18nm at 13000' with a slight look-down attack. You can basically say it would be around 35nm at 40000' ... launch it from a supersonic aircraft, you might get 2-3nm more, launch it from a supercruising raptor, you're looking at maybe 40-42nm ... add the new extended rocket on top of this, you get 45-50nm or so.

I was watching what may have been the same show- but I did not catch that part.. I do recall the narrator saying that the "schedule" called for the "D" to be in full service by 2010.

Sounds like you were watching the final episode of Dogfights, judging by that B1 missile truck you referred to.

The show also showed orbital combat in the year 2050 between a Russian and US made space vehicles. The US one used a laser beam to melt the Russian craft's engines, which caused it to drop out of orbit and burn up in the atmosphere.

Between this at the Su-47s being presented as legitamate 5 gen stealth adversaries for the Raptor (you can't blame them there, not much else to go on, gotta make stuff up I suppose :P ), I'd take that show with a grain of salt. ;) It was entertaining, despite the many errors.

By the 2050 I'll be one foot in the grave and won't really care for space program and 8th gen fighters! So will the creator of that "What if show"!

I watched 1st and 2nd season of Dogfights and you must admit it's bloody biased! No German WW2 aces were mentioned and we know there's plenty! On the other hand, Germans were introduced as desperate cowards in that "Luftwaffe's deadliest mission" episode!

So AMRAAM range might have been 2000 miles if launched from the Space Shuttle!

True. It was an American show made for American television, hence the bias and almost total focus on American pilots. This American here, yours truly, would have appreciated hearing from British/Russian/German/Italian/Polish/Japanese/Korean/Vietnamese, etc. pilots, but for the general audience that the show was geared to, you're probably going to have to stick to US pilots.

Information about Russian air-to-air missiles i find on internet is not similar to info from Lock On's Encyclopedia

Eg: R-27ER (AA-10 Alamo-C) - the longest range missile has max range of 120-130km but the one in Lock On has range of 70km only, which's wrong ?

ps: i remember that we've a thread about "How to use ECM in Lock On" but i can't find it, can you guys help me ?

The R-27R (the real thing) has a high-high range of 35km. The ER might certainly be twice that ...
