pre-flare useless vs AIM-9X ?

Thanks for the clarification @GGTharos.  RNG strikes again!  So no joy on pre-flaring in general then?  Good to know.  Not a knock against DCS's implementation, mind you, just helpful to know which RL tactics are beneficial and which ones can be ignored.

@DanielNL  If you're concerned about balance perhaps get in touch with the manager of your preferred server and request that they restrict usage of 9Xs?  Or maybe find a 1990s and earlier server.

It's potentially very useful, because it allows you to put more flares into the FoV than if you had waited for the launch.   And maybe there's someone else you didn't see trying to take a shot at you at the same time.

For some modules where you can't see the reticle for the missile (eg F5) pre-flare might cause them to launch on the flare, since they don't necessarily know what the seeker is tracking.

Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D

I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

What one can definitely say is that it ruins the DCS PvP experience for all those players on the opposite end, to have a basically un-evadable thrust-vectoring missile like that one...

That's the sense of developing new weapons: Technologic superiority. The opposite is mass of weapons and/or plattforms. That's warfare in a nutshell. It hasn't to be "fair" or balanced. And DCS isn't a Battlefield (or any other multiplayer balanced game), it's a simulation.
