I'm a little worried that at some point DCS will end up using more than one 500GB SSD. I hope the rapidly rising demand for storage is something that's on the radar for Eagle Dynamics.

I completely understand that high quality textures and models take up a lot of space, but I find that the maps especially tend to take up a lot more space than they should given the level of fidelity. There are other flight sims with more detailed terrain that don't use nearly the same amount of space.

I realize that fixing this sort of thing can be a seriously huge operation, possibly dealing with the engine, but at some point the storage requirements are going to become a serious problem. Given that we're all asking for more maps, I'm a little worried about what it's going to mean, because DCS already take up half of an SSD for me.

It is question about user own personal opinions what is wanted to be purchased and installed. If person want to buy everything and install everything, then they certainly can go and invest 40-50 € for a new SSD or M.2 (read/write speed 500-1000 MB/s for that price range) where can be extra maps or modules installed. It is same thing where someone might not be able buy all modules and all maps, some might not be able buy a 400 € joystick with a 450 € throttle and 300 € pedals + everything else. For that a cheap SSD is very simple solution, less than half of the top modules prices and far more benefits then from that.

Easy and first solution for everyone who has less space is to make decisions without greediness to have it all installed at once. Just uninstall one map

  • Nevada 35 GB
  • Persian Gulf 34 GB
  • Syria 48 GB
  • Normandy 16 GB
  • Caucasus 17 GB

The modules are usually between 3.5 GB (F-14) and 280 MB (Christen Eagle II) where average is about 1.7 GB per module.

I find those fairly acceptable levels, considering that one AAA title can take a 80-150 GB these days and offers a lot less fun time than DCS World does.

i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S.

i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.

More than likely, I dont have some Modules, and ill be definitely buying more maps as they come..
Its like any game with DLC, the guy i fly with spent a similar amount on XPlane and he's at just under 1 tb for all his DLC.

SSD's are very cheap though I bought two 1tb used SSD's from ebay, for a little over £110 and combined them via RAID to make 2tb, now i run all my games from those SSD's and i still have half a gig space left. Its been like that for a while. If i dont play something, i uninstall it.

If ever i need to back them up, I just send them over to an 8tb HD zipped.

With the expansion into hi-res screens and VR headsets, im afraid storage will always take a beating..
