RhineHornet Posted April 17, 2021 Posted April 17, 2021 Hello gents and gals! It is quite embarrassing, but when it comes to hardware of PC's I really have not that much knowledge. So if anyone can point me in the right direction I will be very glad to listen to any feedback. So... I was given this "surplus" PC by a good friend of mine a few months ago because I was still running a much older PC with Windows XP. Now with that nice upgrade I immediately installed DCS World as I had pre-purchased the Hornet already back in 2018 and really wanted to finally give this a try DCS World actually runs quite well on this new (by my standards) machine, I have full shadows on and except for heavier scenes the framerate is ok and it runs smooth with the occasional microstutter here and there. The specs are a I7-3770 CPU @ 3.4 GHz, Windows 10 64 Pro, ASUSTeK P8Z77-V Deluxe motherboard and a Nvidia GeForce GTX680 with 2GB (yes, it can handle DCS ok) So after installing DCS World I did not have that much disk space left on this machine, not enough left to install the Open Beta of DCS but I really want to do this badly as I am in total love with the new weather update and reallly want to give it a try So, in order to solve this issue of too little disk space, I impulsively purchased an Samsung Evo 970 Plus 1TB SSD. Now, as far as I could figure out, I also need an adapter card to plug this onto my motherboard, and here is my question which adpater card I should go for? I believe I have PCIe x1, x8 and x16 slots available but is the SSD even compatible with my mainboard? Any guidance is most welcome! Thank you awesome community! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Svsmokey Posted April 17, 2021 Posted April 17, 2021 If you can return it , you would be better off with a Sata SSD . It will plug into your motherboard just like your hard drive or cd , and you will notice no performance difference compared with the pcie one you have now . 1 9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2
reece146 Posted April 17, 2021 Posted April 17, 2021 (edited) You could return the drive as suggested or adapt it if it is more convenient. I've had good luck with these: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B078PTFB5H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B078PTGJ4Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 They are PCI-e x4 cards. IIRC that motherboard only has PCI-e v3.0 on the x16 slot. The rest are PCI-e v2.x. It's not a big deal - still will be faster than SSD through the SSD connectors. QNINE products seem decent. I bought several of these in 2019 and they have been humming away in a bunch of my lab equipment ever since without any issues. I used to run DCS on the same motherboard ( P8Z77-V) and CPU (i7-3770K). I overclocked to 4.5-4.7 MHz with a good air cooler with minimal issues. It made a huge difference to DCS. The machine also had 32GB of RAM (not OC). I don't use it currently - was a "hand me down" to my wife and it is running Elementary Linux. HTH Edited April 17, 2021 by reece146 1
